Sunsets Unlimited

Our recent visit up at the cottage was cold and rainy. Leaves have begun to change into their autumn colours, but there was little sunlight and so the season's finest appeared mildly drab. I've not yet uploaded any photos taken in the past week or so. Those will have to wait until later in the week, but to add a bit of colour to this post, I looked back at a few sunsets seen up at the cottage from the months of August and September. Please remember to click on them to enlarge.

“Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky.” ~ Rabindranath Tagore

"Softly the evening came. The sun from the western horizon Like a magician extended his golden want o'er the landscape; Trinkling vapors arose; and sky and water and forest Seemed all on fire at the touch, and melted and mingled together." ~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

"After a day of cloud and wind and rain Sometimes the setting sun breaks out again, And touching all the darksome woods with light, Smiles on the fields until they laugh and sing, Then like a ruby from the horizon's ring, Drops down into the night." ~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

"How fine has the day been! how bright was the sun, How lovely and joyful the course that he run! Though he rose in a mist when his race he begun, And there followed some droppings of rain: But now the fair traveler's come to the west, His rays are all gold, and his beauties are best; He paints the skies gay as he sinks to his rest, And foretells a bright rising again." ~ Isaac Watts

"'Tis the sunset of life gives me mystical lore, and coming events cast their shadows before." ~ Thomas Campbell

"Today I saw a red and yellow sunset and thought, how insignificant I am! Of course, I thought that yesterday too, and it rained." ~ Woody Allen

"One of the most satisfying experiences I know is fully to appreciate an individual in the same way I appreciate a sunset. When I look at a sunset...I don't find myself saying, 'Soften the orange a little more on the right hand corner, and put a bit more purple along the base, and use a little more pink in the cloud color...' I don't try to control a sunset. I watch it with awe as it unfolds." ~ Carl R. Rogers

"It is almost impossible to watch a sunset and not dream." ~ Bern Williams

"Give me the splendid silent sun at sunset." ~ Walt Whitman

"The sunset caught me, turned the brush to copper, set the clouds to one great roof of flame above the earth." ~ Angela Sanbrano

"The sky broke like an egg into full sunset and the water caught fire" ~ Pamela Hansford Johnson

As I wrote in a prior blog post, I have over 300 photos of sunsets just this year. When on the water, they are the loveliest! Your photos will warm you this winter.

Hilary, your shots always take my breath away. What a nice collection of sunsets! I've been seeing a lot of awesome sunrises in the last two weeks on my way to work now that the days are shorter.

Oh Hilary these are magnificent. I love the one of the boat and Carl Rogers' quote too. He is so right. If only we remembered that with people... :)

Fabulous pics. I may have to do that myself since I have quite a collection of sunset photos.

As always, a great trip along the lake with inspiring words. Happy Weekend.

What a spot! And the pic with the hammock and the last pic are my faves, (not easy to choose any over the other because they're all so great).

I LOVE the last quote. The picts in this post remind me I have floowed your blog for awhile, because I recognize the seasons changing here again with you :).

The Longfellow quote "melted and mingled together" goes so perfectly with that 2nd photograph. These are all so uniquely beautiful.
Thank you for my early morning "shot" of beautiful words and beautiful photographs. ♥

I love your photos! I'm so in love with the sunsets, and sunrises now that I'm up early enough to see them! It's so different here because in Orford, I was surrounded by the woods, so I never had a clear view of the sky, I love it! Great quotations too, lol at the Woody Allen one!

Very nice -- each and every one.

I especially liked the aluminum fishing boat with the outboard motor tied to the dock. I remember spending many hours in a boat just like that when I went to Ontario years ago.

I can almost smell the gasoline from the motor and hear it as it starts and see the little puff of blue smoke (probably not a good sign but...).

Truly God's country. You are a very wealthy person to live where you do and spend time in such a beautiful place!

Lovely photo's :)

Thank you for sharing these photos! It's rare 'round these parts to get a really colorful sunset, so I appreciate their beauty all the more vicariously through your photos.

Merisi said...

Wouldn't you expect that a thoughtful photographer like yourself would squirrel away fabulous and colourful images for those dank gray days? Yes, we would, but still, the exquisite selection from your colour plate is even more enchanting than could be hoped for! Wonderful collection, indeed.

I hope that beautiful sunny autumn weather has reached your shores in the meantime!

Hi Hilary! Your sunset pictures are truly lovely. Isn't a sunset an amazing event? We think of it as the sun going down, but it's really our world turning away from the sun. And we can always count on the sun returning to warm us a few hours later, as we spin through space.

Hilary, my what great pictures you take! Isn't it amazing! I love the colors and water. The quotes were great too.

The pictures do make me dream.

I love the photos of the lake with the sunsets! Getting away before winter sets in is so important. I went to the Markham Fair today just for the purpose of escaping the city and it's pollution.

I'm speechless by their beauty. WOW.

I came here via a link from ds' third-storey window. I've enjoyed your wonderful photos, and love those quotes! I'm a fellow Canadian, from Alberta. Recently I went on a cruise to Alaska and was fortunate enough to catch a few sunset pics as we crossed the Inside Passage. You're welcome to stop by. I'm glad I've found your blog.

These sunsets are gorgeous. Liquid gold. Wonderful stuff.

Our autumn has been strangely drab, too. We are kind of limping into the season that defines our region. Or should.

Have a great week.

The photo with the hammock is my absolute favorite. All of your photos are terrific, and I am never disappointed when I visit your blog.

Every time I thought I'd seen my favorite, another would emerge further down the line! All very beautiful!

• Thanks very much, Hilary. I have indeed been to Congdon's. They still haunt me as the best doughnuts i've ever tasted. And the warmest, friendliest service too. Have one for me next time you stop there. :)

• Tabor, I'm looking forward to seeing some of your many sunset photos over the course of the winter too. I think you're right about their bringing warmth through the season. Thanks always for stopping by. :)

• Thanks kindly, NJ. I've seen far fewer sunrises than sunsets. Maybe it's time to head out and find a few good ones now that they're happening later. Thanks for the always kind words. Much appreciated. :)

• Thank you, Thumbelina. I'm so glad you like the photos and quotes. Always good to see you stop by, my friend. :)

• Thanks, Ellen. I'll look forward to seeing them. Thanks for the visit. :)

• Thank you so much, KC. You have a way of making me feel pretty special when you visit. You're a gift. :)

• Thank you, Rain. I knew someone would get a kick out of Woody Allen's quote. I'm not surprised it was you. :) I'm glad you're enjoying your PEI sunrises and sets. There's certain beauty to the woods, of course, but there's nothing like the waterfront for watching the sun do its thing. Thanks always for stopping by. :)

• Thank you, Abe. Much appreciated. :)

• Thanks for the kind words, Pranksy. Much appreciated. :)

• Thank so kindly, Russell. I totally agree with you about living in this area. I feel very grateful that I can spend time where I do with fine people in beautiful surroundings. I'm glad you enjoyed the post. Thanks always for stopping by. :)

• Thank you, Samson. Much appreciated. :)

• Thanks so much, Merry. I'm glad you can enjoy the sunsets through my photos. You're always welcome to share. Thanks for the visit. :)

• Thanks you very much for your ultra-kind words, Merisi. I never intentionally squirreled these photos away. It's just that every time I thought to post them, something more interesting came along. This time I was ready for them. Thanks always for dropping by. :)

• You're quite right of course, Shammie. The sun doesn't truly set.. we do. I'm glad you stopped by to enjoy the photos and share your own views. Much appreciated. :)

• Thanks very much, Karen. I'm so glad you enjoyed the photos and quotes. Thanks kindly for letting me know. :)

• Thank you, Barbara. You're right about the importance of escaping every now and then. I haven't been to a fall fair in a pretty long time. I hope you enjoyed your rest from the city as much as I did. :)

• Thanks kindly, Joanna. Much appreciated. :)

• Thank you, Kate. I'm glad you enjoyed them. :)

• Welcome, Arti and thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you followed that link on DS's blog too. I'll be sure to visit your blog shortly after I reply to comments. Thanks for the visit. I hope you'll return soon. :)

• Thank you, Sandy. "Limping into the season" is an apt description. You should be a poet! ;) You are indeed a fine poet. Thanks always for stopping by. :)

• Thanks very kindly, JarieLyn. That's a good thing because I'm always very happy when you show up. :)

• Thank you, Anita. That's kind of how I felt about each of the sunsets as they evolved. I always thought I caught it at its peak.. and then they became even more colourful. Nature is pretty wonderful that way. Thanks for the visit. :)

Even though I've seen most of these (both through my eyes and your lens) it's still a wonderful treat to see them posted here beside each other.

We were blessed to have experienced them, and good on you for capturing them so beautifully and sharing that experience with others. :)

I never thought you could outdo yourself until I saw this post. Absolutly fantastic pics. A veritable picture show of Serenity. An artist on a blank canvas would have difficulty capturing the colours you portrayed here. And the selection of captions could not improved upon. Very, very, very well done Hilary.

Oh my goodness!!! How do you ever come home from such a beautiful sight? Watching those sunsets must make you breathless. The blood red sky with the hammock in the foreground is amazing. We just don't have sunsets like that here in my part of California.
Thank you my Friend for all your tender and touching comments while going through the ugly Piggy Flu. It has meant so much to have friends staying in touch.
Hubby and I are going to escape tomorrow for a few days of rest and a change of scenery. By the time we return all the nasty germy bugs should be dead and we should be back to "normal"....whatever that is.

• Thanks so much for the kind words, Jeanne. I'm glad the sunset images brought you peace. Thanks for visiting and letting me know that. :)

• Thanks very kindly, Lulda. I'm glad you like the photos. I'm not looking forward to that white stuff as much as you are though! Thanks for the visit. :)

• Thanks, Nancy. Yes, much like Rain said (12th comment) - the woods, beautiful as they are, just don't allow for the open spaces required to enjoy a sunset. No doubt you still enjoy the beauty they bring in other ways. Thanks for the visit. :)

• Thank you so much, Sandi. You've brought a big smile to my face. Thanks always for your kind words. :)

• Thanks very much, Reb. Much appreciated. :)

• Thank you so much, Sue. I'm so glad to hear that you're feeling better now, and that you're getting away for a bit. Your always kind words are very much appreciated. Thanks kindly for that.. and of course for your regular visits. :)
