Sunsets

I don't know what you could say about a day in which you have seen four beautiful sunsets.
 ~ John Glenn

Four sunsets in one day would indeed be amazing. John Glenn and other astronauts certainly had unique perspectives of our world. At best, I can only photograph one sunset per day, though sometimes I can capture it in various ways. Most of the images below were from different day. There might be a bit of overlap here and there. I hope you enjoy them.

Softly the evening came with the sunset. The sun from the western horizon Like a magician extended his golden want o'er the landscape; Trinkling vapors arose; and sky and water and forest Seemed all on fire at the touch, and melted and mingled together. ~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Bursts of gold on lavender melting into saffron. It's the time of day when the sky looks like it has been spray-painted by a graffiti artist. ~ Mia Kirshner

If I could lick the sunset, I’ll bet it would taste like Neapolitan ice cream.  ~ Jarod Kintz

It is almost impossible to watch a sunset and not dream. ~ Bern Williams

sunset behind pinecones2
After a day of cloud and wind and rain Sometimes the setting sun breaks out again, And touching all the darksome woods with light, Smiles on the fields until they laugh and sing, Then like a ruby from the horizon's ring, Drops down into the night.  ~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

qal sunset
A large drop of sun lingered on the horizon and then dripped over and was gone, and the sky was brilliant over the spot where it had gone, and a torn cloud, like a bloody rag, hung over the spot of its going. And dusk crept over the sky from the eastern horizon, and darkness crept over the land from the east.” ~ John Steinbeck

Today I saw a red and yellow sunset and thought, how insignificant I am! Of course, I thought that yesterday too, and it rained.  ~ Woody Allen

Sunrise, sunset
Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly fly the years
One season following another
Laden with happiness and tears.
~ Sheldon Harnick

sunset going home4
All architecture is great architecture after sunset; perhaps architecture is really a nocturnal art, like the art of fireworks. ~ Gilbert K. Chesterton

Sorry - still no POTW, this week. There's not been enough time for visits which result in my not collecting posts to share. When time permits, I'll have the POTW back up and running. Until then I'll only have photos to share. Thanks for your understanding.  More photos in a few days.

Sunsets Unlimited

Our recent visit up at the cottage was cold and rainy. Leaves have begun to change into their autumn colours, but there was little sunlight and so the season's finest appeared mildly drab. I've not yet uploaded any photos taken in the past week or so. Those will have to wait until later in the week, but to add a bit of colour to this post, I looked back at a few sunsets seen up at the cottage from the months of August and September. Please remember to click on them to enlarge.

“Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky.” ~ Rabindranath Tagore

"Softly the evening came. The sun from the western horizon Like a magician extended his golden want o'er the landscape; Trinkling vapors arose; and sky and water and forest Seemed all on fire at the touch, and melted and mingled together." ~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

"After a day of cloud and wind and rain Sometimes the setting sun breaks out again, And touching all the darksome woods with light, Smiles on the fields until they laugh and sing, Then like a ruby from the horizon's ring, Drops down into the night." ~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

"How fine has the day been! how bright was the sun, How lovely and joyful the course that he run! Though he rose in a mist when his race he begun, And there followed some droppings of rain: But now the fair traveler's come to the west, His rays are all gold, and his beauties are best; He paints the skies gay as he sinks to his rest, And foretells a bright rising again." ~ Isaac Watts

"'Tis the sunset of life gives me mystical lore, and coming events cast their shadows before." ~ Thomas Campbell

"Today I saw a red and yellow sunset and thought, how insignificant I am! Of course, I thought that yesterday too, and it rained." ~ Woody Allen

"One of the most satisfying experiences I know is fully to appreciate an individual in the same way I appreciate a sunset. When I look at a sunset...I don't find myself saying, 'Soften the orange a little more on the right hand corner, and put a bit more purple along the base, and use a little more pink in the cloud color...' I don't try to control a sunset. I watch it with awe as it unfolds." ~ Carl R. Rogers

"It is almost impossible to watch a sunset and not dream." ~ Bern Williams

"Give me the splendid silent sun at sunset." ~ Walt Whitman

"The sunset caught me, turned the brush to copper, set the clouds to one great roof of flame above the earth." ~ Angela Sanbrano

"The sky broke like an egg into full sunset and the water caught fire" ~ Pamela Hansford Johnson
