Gone Fishin'

Thank you to everyone who left such kind comments for my son, Jeffrey on my last blog post. Your good wishes, kind words and prayers are all very much appreciated.

Below are a few random photos taken over the past couple of weeks. They're accompanied by lyrics to which I thought they were suited.
Please remember to click on each photo to enlarge.

A couple of weeks ago, Frank and I went fishing, not too far from his home. We drove along lovely, hilly roads to get there.

"May the trail rise up to meet you. May your heart rejoice in song. May the skies be fair above you as you journey ever on."
(Ever On ~ Dan Fogelberg)

Along the way, we happened upon a small herd of donkeys. We stopped so that I could take a few photos.

"Ill never be your beast of burden. My back is broad but its a hurting"
(Beast of Burden ~ The Rolling Stones)

We caught a few trout and a couple of perch, some of which we kept for dinner. This trout would have ordinarily been deemed too small to keep but it was already injured and bleeding so it became part of that night's dinner.

" Yes, you've been fishin' all the time. I'm a-goin' a-fishin' too. I bet your life, your lovin' wife, catch more fish than you. Any fish bite, got good bait. Here's a little somethin' I would like to relate. Any fish bite, you've got good bait. I'm a-goin' a-fishin', yes, I'm goin' a-fishin', I'm a-goin' a-fishin' too."
(Fishing Blues ~ Henry Thomas)

We stood on a narrow, rocky shore. Occasionally, we waded into the water to steer clear of brush while casting.

"I want to feel myself go under, baby, wWhere the deepest river bleeds. I want to feel it pull me under, darlin' until it drops me to my knees. I want to know that I can find you when there's no more eyes to see. In this cool, clear water runnin' you'll come runnin' to me"
(
Cool, Clear Water ~ Bonnie Riatt)

As the day wore on, I decided to wander up the road to see what was around. The sun was dropping low in the sky, casting lovely, golden light on all that it touched.

"Like a tree in the meadow wind, she will bend to take you in now. Makes no difference where you been. That's the way she feels about you. That's the way she feels about you."
(
Sunlight ~ The Youngbloods)

A chorus of honking led me to a flock of geese, which gathered in the sparkling sunlit water.

"When we arrived on Gillis Mountain you could see for miles in the light. The whitecaps on the sea of blue sparkled like diamonds in the night."
(Gillis Mountain ~ The Rankin Family)

A couple of Canada Geese took to flight
.

"Smell the sea and feel the sky. Let your soul and spirit fly into the mystic."
(
Into the Mystic ~ Van Morrison)

Along the shoreline, where trees meet the water, golden sunlight dazzled my eyes from behind the trees.

"Silent sunlight, welcome in There is work I must now begin."
(
Silent Sunlight ~ Cat Stevens )

Across the road, I found this fence, charming it its pastoral setting.

"Let me be by myself in the evenin' breeze, and listen to the murmur of the cottonwood trees. Send me off forever but I ask you please, don't fence me in." (Don't Fence Me In ~ Bing Crosby)

Once back home, it was time to take Benny for his second walk of the day. Here he is being his usual, adorable self.

"Obedient and true-loyal through and through. A fuzzy reflection of you. If you are hurt, I will lick it. If you feed me, I won't forget it. If I mess up, just rub my nose in it. You let me out to sniff around, do my business and stretch out, and I always come running for you. I look cute at the end of your leash - your adorable beast." (Your Adorable Beast ~ Bobby Bare Jr.)

The fresh spring water rushes along the rock-strewn creek, babbling and bubbling as it does.

" Like a rock, I was strong as I could be. Like a rock, nothin ever got to me. Like a rock, I was something to see. Like a rock."
(Like A Rock ~ Bob Seger)

Much of our walk hugged the edge of the creek. At that magical hour, when the sun was low in the sky, this tree marked the edge of enchantment.

"And it goes on and on, watching the river run. Further and further from things that we've done, leaving them one by one. And we have just begun watching the river run. Listening, learning and yearning to run, river, run."
(
Watching the River Run ~ Kenny Loggins"

Taken from beneath the limb of a cedar, these branches appeared to be gnarly figures dancing to the music of the wind.

"There's a world far away from the one we see. There's a dream I will never let go. One thing is certainly true. This moment's for me and for you. So while there's not a thing that we can do, let's dance."
(Chris Rea ~ Let's Dance)

These tiny, yellow Trout Lilies were growing along the pathway. The flower gets its name from the similarity between its mottled leaves and the markings of the Speckled Trout.

"And yesterday I saw you kissing tiny flowers, but all that lives is born to die. And so I say to you that nothing really matters, and all you do is stand and cry." (That's the Way ~ Led Zeppelin)

Love the dancing cedar limbs - and the fact you listed Chris Rea, Bob Seger and Van Morrison songs.

You've been paying attention. ;)

First of all I must apologise for missing your last post & photos. It's no wonder you are so proud of your son. Anyway I have read it now and love the photos and the poignancy of the post.

This one is packed full of lovely photos!
I particularly liked the fence going down to the water. They are all superb though, as I am sure everyone will agree.

Beautiful photos.
And words. Thanks.

Beautiful pictures as always. True spring signs. Particularly love the pictures of the birds; many migrating birds are now returning to Scandinavia to spend their summer here. I love this time of the year.;)

Into the Mystic....one of my all time favorites.
Great post.

I think it's great that you have a nice man like Frank to go on fishing trips with. And a dog like Benny of course.
I have no idea where you find the words to all those crazy songs.... do you know the lyrics of every song ever written, just running through your head at random, waiting for the right photograph that needs a caption???? However you do it, it really works! Great pics and fitting captions, once again! Rock on, Hilary!
P.S. My B'ville son and DIL become a true family in the next few days, yes, baby is arriving VERY SOON!!!!!

Hi hilary, i'm still fighting the remnants of the migraine but wanted to answer your question about preventatives...(i'll have to come back to read the post when i can focus better)

i don't have dietary triggers to my migraines.mine are the result of 3 car accidents and some wicked whiplash/neck injuries, but they have also settled into a cyclical thing affected by hormones. (in case any of that matters)

ok, so the prevention for me involves a daily prescription of verapamil as well as mega doses of magnesium (400 mg) and riboflavin (500 mg). also i know part of my problem this time around is i let myself go too long between chiropractic adjustments (which also involves a particular type of adjustment to my skull itself, i think the chiro calls it craniopathy or something like that.) so i am off to get that taken care of this morning. hope some of this info is helpful to you

• I thought they were adorable, Angie. A rare sight. And Benny always does his best to be cute. Thanks for stopping by. :)

• Did you say something, Frank? ;) I thought you might like some of those tunes. :)

• Maggie, no need to apologize. Catching up with blog posts takes time. ;) Thanks always for the very kind words. Very much appreciated. :)

• Thank you, Thumbelina. :)

• Thanks very much, Protege. I love the season too. Everything is newly-awake and looking lovely. Thanks always for stopping by. :)

• Thanks kindly, Sandy. I must have taken about a dozen shots of just that. They kept drawing my eye. I'm glad you liked it. :)

• Thanks very much, Gary. :)

• Thanks, Hilary. I'm glad you enjoyed it and that one of your favourite songs made the list. :)

• Thanks, Shammie. I wouldn't know the joys of fishing if it weren't for Frank. He in turn has learned the joys of Saturday morning garage sales from me. ;) Some of the lyrics are in my head waiting for the photos. Some of the photos evoke the words. Many come to me from Google when I use key words to find them. As brief as these posts are word-wise, they take me a long time to put together, but I do enjoy them. I'm glad you do too. You must be so excited about this soon-to-be grandchild. If you're going to be visiting through the summer, maybe we can get together for a coffee or tea. My email is on my sidebar. :)

• Lime, thanks so much for taking the time and responding so quickly. I so appreciate it. I sure hope that your migraine is long-gone by now and that you can keep on top of it. Thanks so much for stopping by and answering my question. :)

• Thanks, MPM. DF still evokes a bittersweet sigh in me too. And Benny often evokes and exasperated one in me. ;) Thanks for the kind words. Always appreciated. :)

• Thanks kindly, Ellen. I'm glad you could join me. :)

• Daryl, I'll bet you know more of them than you realize. But maybe your coworkers are glad you don't. ;) Thanks for stopping by. :)

• Thanks so much for your kind words, Nikina. I'm glad you enjoyed the post. :)

• Pat, let's hope he can't. He's already got lethal doses of the cute factor. Thanks always for the kind words. :)

• Thanks kindly, NJ. I'm glad Benny makes you happy too. Thanks so much for stopping by. :)

• Thanks very much, Seamus. Your kind words are very much appreciated. :)

• Thanks kindly, Sandi. I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)

• Dianne, you never fail to make my day with your kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed the post. You should see that spot in person. A photo never, ever does it justice. Thanks so much for your visit. :)

• Tabor, thanks so much for coming along, and for your always-kind comments. Much appreciated. :)

• Thanks so much, DS. Your kind words are much appreciated. :)

• Thanks kindly, Redbush. I'm so glad you enjoyed the post. :)

what a lovely post! and what an original idea to accompany your beautiful photos with music (at least I could hear the music in my head for those songs I recognised).

this looks like a neat place to hang out... I'm going to have to sign up to follow! :o)

I miss Canada... haven't been in over 10 years... sigh! These pictures remind of the beauties to be found in your country. I'm glad you enjoy them and share them here!

Love the fishing parts... of course I'm an avid fly fishing person but haven't wet my line yet this year due to my illness and all the time I have spent in hospitals but I'm hoping for a little spot in there to steal a few hours soon this summer.

Benny is adorable!

I have just read the last post re. your wonderful, brave son and really it sent tingles down my spine. You must be very proud. I lived in Candada for 6 years so know of his pride too.

I loved these pictures too, they are truly beautiful. I would like to add you to my blog list if that's OK.

You are so very kind to drop by my place!!! Thank you!!! I am so honored! This is a fantastic post...I love the way you interwove the lyrics of favorite artists with your fantastic photos! This is a brilliant photo essay, and really touches me. I think in lyrics...everything connects to a song...and you have a gift for putting those words to beautiful images! Thank you for this journey! I loved every minute of it! ~Janine XO

Your ability to match lyrics to pictures inspires me to create a post of my own.

I love those sun-drenched photographs! And I want to pet those donkeys -- they look so soft! Frank is a good guy to stop so often for photos (it drives my dh bonkers when I do that).

I so loved going on your fishing trip with you. The scenery and song lyrics were so perfect Hilary. I love the phrase "dancing to the music of the wind". What an illustration and the picture of the limbs looks like something out of the vintage movie "Fantasia".
