Shadow Dancers and Posts of the Week

One lovely summer day, I was out doing my usual tours around the pond. I stopped at the dam for a while, as I most often do. I have seen some of the most interesting creatures by this dam - painted turtles, mink, raccoons with their kits, ducks and ducklings, herons and countless other birds. It's always worth stopping there.

On this day, there weren't any overly interesting creatures to see but a couple of simple sparrows were displaying some curious behaviour. I watched as they would leap off of the side of the dam, face the concrete wall and flutter their wings, hovering in place. They were seemingly pecking at something on the wall. That something was out of my lens' focal range, but I presume they were enticed by insects.

Watch this little guy.

The jump... wheeeeee!

shadow jumping and dancing
There's that fascination with the wall.

A couple of other sparrows were doing the same thing on the other side of the dam. The sun was bright and several inches behind them, their shadows followed suit. I started snapping photos of the birds pecking at the wall but ended up just enjoying all of the shadow dancing. I hope you do too.

You get a good idea of the angle of the sun by looking at the shadow.

Along came some company.

And then out of nowhere - a beautiful Kingfisher.

HAPPY 4th to all my American neighbors (without the U just for you) to the south!

And now, without further delay, here are the Posts of the Week. The icon below is yours for the taking if if your blog post is named as a POTW.

Benny Haz a Sad and Posts of the Week

On one of our many trips between my place and his, Frank leaned over and nudged me after glancing at his rear view mirror. "Take a look at the long face." I slowly turned back to look at Benny. It was pathetic, I tell you. Just pathetic.

despondent
I haz a sad.

After all these years, he still doesn't get why he has to be crated in the back seat of the car when his people clearly enjoy their uncaged freedom in the front seat. He made his feelings abundantly clear when he broke out into musical whimpers.

despondent2
Nobuddy knows de trubble I seeeen.

Benny, it's not that bad and really, you have it pretty good.

At least you're comfortable, unlike this guy.

And we're not humiliating you by suspending you in midair.

Wait until you see how we're going to travel with the cats! Thank your lucky stars that's not you.

Remember, Benny - life could be a whole lot worse. It's not like you belong to a certain American politician or anything.

So count your little canine blessings.

One more thing before I move on to the POTW. If you haz a sad or even if you duzen't, I'm sure this short video of this beautiful couple and their impromptu duet will have you smiling and bouncing in your seat.

Polychromatic and Posts of the Week

Before I get into autumn leaves, I wanted to share a couple of colourful images which caught my eye late last month, when the weather was particularly warm and summer-like.

balloon girl
We were just returning from a walk around the pond when we happened upon this little girl - a guest at a neighbour's birthday party. She might have been hoping that she could float along with her balloons.

psychedelic
A few days later, we took a day trip to a town called Port Perry, Ontario. We were walking along the main street when this psychedelic van drove by. The driver saw me lift the camera to my eye and she smiled proudly.

And now without further delay, here are the Posts of the Week. I have fewer than usual this week because I'm still trying to catch up on reading, and on uploading and sorting through my own photos. Hopefully I'll have more for you next time but I hope you enjoy this week's selections.

Questionable Leaves and Posts of the Week

Today's and tomorrow's posts have both been scheduled. I'll be away from the computer for a couple of days. I'll catch up with blog visits and comment replies when I'm back home.

scattered oak leaves

On the day I saw this smattering of oak leaves, I had a few questions tumbling about in my mind. Somehow, the leaves' position on the pavement vaguely reminded me of a question mark. Can you see it?

By Gully, It's the Posts of the Week!

The other day, I walked up to a nearby lake.

Once I arrived, I was greeted by this lovely young bird who was perched on the rail. The gender isn't really obvious but I think this one was a gull because she was hanging around trying to impress the buoys.

She had a good laugh over that one.

Perhaps not.

A Treat and the Posts of the Week

I saw this little interaction between this woman and pooch while out walking the other day. The dog was really hesitant to take the doggie treat which she just happened to have in her pocket. Eventually the pup did accept it and each went on their own way.

Before you head off on your own way, I wanted to let you know that there will be a bit of a treat for you folks tomorrow - in the form of a giveaway. Please be sure to tune in tomorrow morning to read all about it. And of course, there will also be a few photos, as usual.

POTW is One Year Young

Several hours after I posted last week's Posts of the Week, I began to wonder how long it had been since David McMahon from Authorblog passed me the torch. Looking back to my first post on this subject, I discovered that it had been exactly one year since I had begun.

So here we are one week later but I'm still going to acknowledge my first year of POTW (not to be confused with my three plus years of blogging) with a new award icon which appears below. You might notice another new feature which indicates to which category the posts belong. I'm not positive if I'll continue categorizing them each week because it's a bit more time-consuming this way. Time will tell.

Today, I'd like to thank David for trusting me with his beloved Posts of the DAY - yes day. He found ten posts each and every single day along with all of his other posts. I still don't know how he did it because I find it to be a lot of work to do this once a week. But I'm so glad that he did because it was through is caring efforts that I met many of the folks whose blogs I enjoy today.

So thank you, David and thanks to all of you who support my blog and the blogs of those to whom I link. You folks are terrific!

And now, without further delay, here are the Posts of the week. The icon below is yours for the taking if if your blog post is named as a Post of the Week - either as top post or as a runner up.
