On this day, there weren't any overly interesting creatures to see but a couple of simple sparrows were displaying some curious behaviour. I watched as they would leap off of the side of the dam, face the concrete wall and flutter their wings, hovering in place. They were seemingly pecking at something on the wall. That something was out of my lens' focal range, but I presume they were enticed by insects.
Watch this little guy.
He's thinking about it.
Peering over the edge.
The jump... wheeeeee!
There's that fascination with the wall.
A couple of other sparrows were doing the same thing on the other side of the dam. The sun was bright and several inches behind them, their shadows followed suit. I started snapping photos of the birds pecking at the wall but ended up just enjoying all of the shadow dancing. I hope you do too.
Pecking at the wall - followed by his shadow.
You get a good idea of the angle of the sun by looking at the shadow.
Along came some company.
Shadow dancing for two.
And then out of nowhere - a beautiful Kingfisher.
HAPPY 4th to all my American neighbors (without the U just for you) to the south!
And now, without further delay, here are the Posts of the Week. The icon below is yours for the taking if if your blog post is named as a POTW.

Wow! Great catch with the pics! Amazing!
Thanks for the mention! :)
I'm off to visit the others.
I'm fascinated by those birds in your pictures. I'm guessing they are going after some insects on the concrete.
And then the Kingfisher showed up. Getting in on the party.
I love those shadows! I wonder what they were pecking at? Congrats to the POTW!
See, you always find something great to photo. Fun.
Chasing shadows, that's funny.
Hilary, some people are like these birds, looking back for their shadow. Only forward!

I love the shadow dance. They are indeed playing, don't you think? And thanks for the POTWs. I'll got some reading to do...

I love the in flight shots and the shadows

you are too good to me but I love it :)
I wonder if those sparrows were all called Harvey?
(reference to Harvey Wallbanger, in case you didn't get it.... which of course I know you did!)
Thanks for picking my Tshirt dress as one of your posts of the week! Big surprise. Want one? I'll make you one. Seriously.
You seem to be in the right place at the right time with your camera.
Love the shadow dancing!

Very unique, something I never have tried but will now.
loved the shadow dancers. :) and, again, a great bunch of POTW picks! enjoyed all of them...
I think I have said this before, but you have that wonderful eye to see things that the rest of us would only notice briefly. Lovely photos. I wonder what they were eating?
It looks like it was a rather warm day. The birds were enjoying their playful stunts.
Thanks for the 4th of July mention for those of us in the USA. Lots going on today in this little patriotic town.
You do a good job of finding interesting posts for us to read. I will check them out.
Hope your day is lovely.
Thanks for the POTWs and the Fourth of July wishes.
Wonderful photos as always (shadows in flight--awesome!). Congratulations to some of my most favorite bloggers. And many thanks for the good Fourth wishes. Hope you are beating the heat as well.
Love those shadows, and the kingfisher is a bonus.
The photos are fabulous. I love the shadows and seeing the way you captured the birds and their antics. Great job. And thank you so much for the mention. It is very nice of you to find our story that interesting. Thanks again, Oma Linda
Such interesting behavior of the sparrows! But it did make for fun observation and then the kingfisher! Have a great day H. and thanks for the POTW!
Those playful bird shots are amazing!
great potw picks!
and fantastic shots and texture!
love the shadow dancers:)
big hugs!
How curious - a mystery that needs solving. What is it about that wall? Glad you watched so you can show us.
So curious as to what they were munching on. Beautiful shadow shots, though. And you probably caught something hardly another soul on earth has taken the time to notice. ;)
Shadow dancing is a whole lot better than shadow boxing. Very interesting.
There is always something out Bull Shoals Dam too, with a Lake on one side and White River on the other. Besides fisherpersons, there are buzzards, gulls in the winter, and tourists which make for fun people watching---kinda like sitting in WalMart watching people.
These are such fun shots. Their shadows are just as interesting as the birds themselves! And you got a Kingfisher. I've only photographed one and it was from such a long distance away resulting in a subpar photo. I love those birds.
Congrats to all the POTWers!! Will try to make time to visit.
Birdie ballet! Marvelous shots!
I want to jump into my life with two feet after taking in this post!
I have never seen anything like this. Really awesome .
Off to check out some of your picks.
Have a great rest of the week.
Beautiful photography as always.;) Love their shadows, it gives the images an enticing feel, as the brain tries to figure out at first glance which one is the real bird.;)
Have a great end of the week dear Hilary.;)
xoxo
That was very clever of you to catch their shadows! Love the effect, very playful and kinetic.
Thank you again for taking the time to read us. Thanks for inspiring us with your images. Stay cool.
Oh, my post is here! Thank you so much, Hilary ~
