Shadow Dancers and Posts of the Week

One lovely summer day, I was out doing my usual tours around the pond. I stopped at the dam for a while, as I most often do. I have seen some of the most interesting creatures by this dam - painted turtles, mink, raccoons with their kits, ducks and ducklings, herons and countless other birds. It's always worth stopping there.

On this day, there weren't any overly interesting creatures to see but a couple of simple sparrows were displaying some curious behaviour. I watched as they would leap off of the side of the dam, face the concrete wall and flutter their wings, hovering in place. They were seemingly pecking at something on the wall. That something was out of my lens' focal range, but I presume they were enticed by insects.

Watch this little guy.

The jump... wheeeeee!

shadow jumping and dancing
There's that fascination with the wall.

A couple of other sparrows were doing the same thing on the other side of the dam. The sun was bright and several inches behind them, their shadows followed suit. I started snapping photos of the birds pecking at the wall but ended up just enjoying all of the shadow dancing. I hope you do too.

shadow dancing again
You get a good idea of the angle of the sun by looking at the shadow.

Along came some company.

Shadow dancing for two.

And then out of nowhere - a beautiful Kingfisher.

HAPPY 4th to all my American neighbors (without the U just for you) to the south!

And now, without further delay, here are the Posts of the Week. The icon below is yours for the taking if if your blog post is named as a POTW.

I'm fascinated by those birds in your pictures. I'm guessing they are going after some insects on the concrete.

And then the Kingfisher showed up. Getting in on the party.

I love those shadows! I wonder what they were pecking at? Congrats to the POTW!

I think I have said this before, but you have that wonderful eye to see things that the rest of us would only notice briefly. Lovely photos. I wonder what they were eating?

It looks like it was a rather warm day. The birds were enjoying their playful stunts.

Thanks for the 4th of July mention for those of us in the USA. Lots going on today in this little patriotic town.

You do a good job of finding interesting posts for us to read. I will check them out.

Hope your day is lovely.

How curious - a mystery that needs solving. What is it about that wall? Glad you watched so you can show us.

Rita said...

So curious as to what they were munching on. Beautiful shadow shots, though. And you probably caught something hardly another soul on earth has taken the time to notice. ;)

NitWit1 said...

Shadow dancing is a whole lot better than shadow boxing. Very interesting.

There is always something out Bull Shoals Dam too, with a Lake on one side and White River on the other. Besides fisherpersons, there are buzzards, gulls in the winter, and tourists which make for fun people watching---kinda like sitting in WalMart watching people.

Gail Dixon said...

These are such fun shots. Their shadows are just as interesting as the birds themselves! And you got a Kingfisher. I've only photographed one and it was from such a long distance away resulting in a subpar photo. I love those birds.

Congrats to all the POTWers!! Will try to make time to visit.

Beautiful photography as always.;) Love their shadows, it gives the images an enticing feel, as the brain tries to figure out at first glance which one is the real bird.;)
Have a great end of the week dear Hilary.;)
