Mystery Lines and Posts of the Week

The image below was taken shortly after our first significant snowfall of the year. I was out snapping various photos when I noticed these lines. The area around them was untouched. Pristine snow surround them on all sides for at least six feet (2 m). Nothing was dripping from above. The only prints anywhere near them were my own as I approached to capture the photograph. The middle lines were about twelve inches (30 cm) long. I have no idea what made them. Any guesses?

I'm not a fan of snow, but untouched snow is very pretty.

Don't have a clue. They almost look like wind ridges, but I think they're too small and the snow around looks calm.

So much beauty to see/read before the day is over. Thanks for this service, for the wonderful creative juices out there we would never know about.

Reminds me of a pitchfork that was dipped down in the snow and picked back up...

There is some great blog reading here Hilary. Thanks for finding them for us.

...maybe these marks are from a great winged creature with long, sharp claws... never in Ontario though, right?

June said...

Wonderful photo.
I would guess wingtips made those furrows. An avian chase scene, with one or the other dipping low, then climbing again, presents itself as a possibility.

Love your ridges - probably created by wind?

So much good reading material this week. Thanks!

Dave said...

Were the marks scratches or raised on the snow? It was difficult to tell. As LadyFi suggests, probably made by the wind - Dave

An animal did it, it only comes out when it snows. It is the Windiwisp or Ida is the most common.

Crop Circles :)

Thanks for the award. Perhaps the photo is a branch touching the ground slightly after a snow and wind. Was it beneath the edge of a tree? Unfortunately I am not a romantic and really interested in what ACTUALLY did it!

thank you for the smile this morning hilary...and congrats to all the potw...great snap as well...

Strange markings indeed. I thought maybe the wing of a bird; but then I'd expect a matching pair.

Thanks for the POTW award Hilary. :)

Thanks, Hilary for choosing my post for photography!

Those lines are incredibly interesting....it's almost as though the wind decided to grab a few pieces of snow and pick them up.

Thanks for the award Hilary. Means a lot to me.

we have lines like that all over the snow in our yard: from little mice that travel in tunnels underneath the snow!!!! Do I get a prize????????????????????????????

Lisa said...

Hi Hilary:)We get markings like that outside our kitchen window and I actually see little voles or mice traveling through the snow; so cute.
It sure does look like an angel wing though; perhaps your guide is traveling ahead of you.

What a cool picture Hilary! These look like another group of great posts to read...will visit them later today after the little's are asleep or tomorrow when I am not working....happy hump day Hilary. XX

Perhaps there's something under the snow in that spot ..

That is so intriguing...someone's wing....

And thank you, again. I am humbled by the company I am in....

Hmmmm...it's very pretty! But, I learned from Mantracker that nature doesn't make straight lines, so it has to be man-made! :)

CiCi said...

We had some lines in the snow similar to the ones in your pic, but they were longer and they were where the really small black squirrels hopped onto the snow and looked like they were doing the butterfly stroke through snow a foot high.

You have some great picks this week. I hope you are doing well.

Thanks so much for my Post of the Week! It means a great deal to me. I truly appreciate it.

Thanks, Hilary, for the POTW mention...you are kind. I always enjoy the posts that you choose for your list and it's a real honor to be included.

Now, about the lines in the snow...the only thing I can think of is that there is something underneath the snow in that spot that had grooves in it and the snow that has fallen has settled leaving those indentations. That's a wild guess, I know!

Sasquatch has reached out his claws to create snow graffiti!

Off to enjoy some wonderful reads. Thanks much, Hilary! :)

It's a mystery.

I love seeing animal footprints in the snow. On the first morning of our recent and still present (it's never going to melt) snow, you could track a big dog's meander through the neighborhood. He wandered up and down and back and forth.

Hmmm...the wintry equivalent of a crop circle...fallen twigs?
Love your choices for POTW this week. Some brilliant stuff there.

Reb said...

Hawk? Maybe tree branches - how strong has the wind been? Otherwise, no idea, but very cool. Thanks for the POTW ;)

Zuzana said...

Dear Hilary, what an intriguing pattern in the snow - could it have been made by something living (moving) under the snow?;)
Very good pick for POTW today, I so enjoyed that post myself when I read it a few days back.
Congratulations to everyone else nominated.;)

Oh Hilary, you have literally made my WEEK! What a surprise to check my comments and see "congrats on POTW!" HUH? I made POTW?
I am just recovering from the flu (yes, I had my shot two months ago, but caught a different strain,) and still feeling quite miserable, so this was just what I needed to perk me up! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

As for those lines, it does appear something swooped down and dragged the snow, as the furrows are deeper in the middle than on the ends. The most reasonable answer is that a hawk spied a small animal and swooped down to grab it. But then where's the imprint left by the small animal?

Maybe you experienced a small earthquake during the night that slightly cracked the ground. SMALL earthquake. Very small. Teensy. Like almost not there.

Probably not.

Oh hey thank you! I am very sincerely flattered.

My first guess was perhaps something under the lines that made the snow form that way, but I'm sure you're familiar with the area and would have known. Mystery!! I like the angel's wings theory...
Thanks for pointing us to those wonderful blog posts and images!

Karen said...

I say, the wind blew through there making the snow waves???

SandyCarlson said...

Thanks for this, my friend.

Those lines are interesting. Snow is full of mystery.

Looks like angels skating in the snow.LOL!

Seriously, I thought the lines were over a sewer grate, or some sort of heat source, melting the snow from underneath.

Will check out your posts of the week.

That image.
It is curious indeed, maybe they are twigs that have been snowed over.

Some excellent blog stories and photos, you do gather some great stuff! As far as the lines in the snow, it's a mystery to me.

Indrani said...

May be someone scraped through it.
Interesting pic.

Rajesh said...

Wonderful lines in the snow.

Hilary: I feel there were two birds involved in the markings and this indicates quick abduction of one over the other. That's my view. :)

Hilary said...

Thank you everyone for your clever ideas about the lines in the snow. I guess we'll never know for sure but at least now there are theories. ;) Thank you also for your always kind support of the bloggers who are named for the POTW.

Thank you so much for listing my story on your site. I didnt know you had until one of your readers came to check it out. Many thanks:)I'll thank Jinksy as well. It was quite a story, it captured the hearts of our country that winter.

I LOVE the beautiful photos you have posted. Canada is so beautiful, eh?:) We have snow here right now too, it's like living in a Christmas card. Love your site!
