What's in a Name (Do You Remember Them?)?

I know that a lot of you folks who so kindly read my blog and comment regularly were born in North America during the 1940's, 50's and 60's. If you're at all like I am, television became a big part of your daily entertainment throughout those latter decades and beyond.

If you heard the names Lucy Ricardo or Hawkeye Pierce, you'd immediately be able to tell me that they are characters from I Love Lucy and M*A*S*H respectively. But how familiar are you with television's more obscure roles? Those background characters who appeared routinely, but never obtained starring role status. They have hauntingly familiar names but if you heard them today, could you connect them to their television show? Of course Google could probably provide you with all of the answers, but please try using your own brain power to remember these names, and the shows which gave them life. So, how many do you know?

I'm going to turn on comment moderation so that your answers won't appear below until a few days later, so that everyone has a chance to play. Have fun!

1) Otis Campbell

2) Consuelo Lopez

3) Pinky Tuscadero

4) Agnes Dipesto

5) Gil Chesterton

6) Jenny Piccalo

7) Georgette Franklin

8) Joe Gerard

9) Gladys Kravitz

10) Dr. Alfred Bellows

11) Earl J. Waggedorn

12) Kelly Kapoor

For those of you who are too young to remember, or don't wish to play along, here are some photos taken over the past few days. Please remember to click on them to enlarge.

A typical shot of Benny while out walking. He's the canine definition of perpetual motion. If he's not chasing sticks or wayward clumps of snow, he's wrestling with his own leash, achieving his dominance over it. Crazy dog! (please click to enlarge)

Although many snowfalls have dusted this oak, it still manages to cling tenaciously to a couple of its leaves. It shares the mindset of a Jack Russell Terrier. (please click to enlarge)

In summer, this picnic table is an inviting place to sit and watch the animal life on the lake. It's just a tad less hospitable in winter, but still nestled in a scenic location. (please click to enlarge)

This branch hangs a bit heavy after repeated snowfalls. It gently sweeps the snow below it as it sways back and forth in the breeze. (please click to enlarge)

Another popular spot in summer. Young and old tend to stop by that rock at the bottom of the hill, to watch the water (or ice) in any season. (please click to enlarge)

Amid the usual cluster of Sparrows, Cardinals, Mourning Doves, Juncos and Chickadees, this little bird and its mate were new visitors to my feeder. I believe it's an American Goldfinch dressed in its winter garb. (please click to enlarge)

I keep a heating sheet on the roof of the house to prevent a buildup of ice under the shingles, as we experience thaws and refreezes. This ice was formed after snow melted and dripped off of the roof, and refroze onto the downspout and wood pieces below. (please click to enlarge)

Before plugging that sheet in this year, the late-day sun reflected off of icicles which hung in front of my son's bedroom. This was taken through the screen and two panes of glass - hence the multiple reflections. (please click to enlarge)

And here's Ymir (a.k.a. Frank) - the Norse frost giant, doing a fine imitation of his pal, Thor. (please click to enlarge)

As the day winds down, the sky came alive with soft hues of peach, pink and mauve. Winter sunsets are often so striking. (please click to enlarge)

The setting sun reflects in the snow and ice as seen from behind a park bench overlooking the pond. (please click to enlarge)

Behind the weeping willow, the sky has changed to deeper shades of purple, pink and gold which bleed into the snow below. (please click to enlarge)

I'll release comments in few days along with the correct answers for the names listed above. Thanks for playing!

With my failing memory, I'm struggling to put the familiar names with the right shows and could only feel confident about these:

1) Otis Campbell - The Andy Griffith Show

4) Agnes Dipesto - Moonlighting

7) Georgette Franklin - Mary Tyler Moore Show (Ted's wife)

9) Gladys Kravitz - Bewitched

10) Dr. Alfred Bellows - I Dream of Jeannie

*waves hi* at Frank - great picture of him with the icicle!

Nice photos again.
1. The town drunk on Andy Griffith?
2. ?
3. Grease bad girl?
4. Sidekick to some detective...hmm Moonlighting?
9. Darren & Samantha's nosy neighbor on Bewitched.

I know some of the others but can't place the show. Brain freeze!

First of all I love the pictures. They never fail to amaze me with their beauty. My sister's first day at a new job had an exciting event...well for me but not so much for her. This guy came in and said I'm Alan Alda and who are you? She didn't have a clue who he was until everyone else got excited. She's 8 years younger than I.

Truly from my own brain power I only remembered Pinky Tuscadero and at that I only rememebered her as being from Happy Days but what a great walk down memory lane as googled each one. Ted Baxter's ditzy girlfriend was a great character!

Russell said...

No comments??!! Wait! You turned the comment moderator off! For a moment there I thought I was in the Twilight Zone!

I will be honest. I cannot place most of those people...! Well, certainly, Otis Campbell is of Andy Griffith fame - but often the first question in a quiz is a softball one! Heh!

Georgette has to be from the Mary Tyler Moore Show! I don't think there has ever been another Georgette! And what a great character she was! I can hear Ted in the background and now Mr. Grant's voice...! Heh!

I will take a pass on the rest of these characters! I recognize some of the names but can't place them... I will check back in a few days and see who they were!

You can put me down for an honest 2 out of 12 ... sounds about right for me! Heh!

Take care.

I would love to play along, but I am able to guess at so few of these it is embarrassing. I will be intrigued to see the answers in the coming days.

I love the little face of a man (gnome?) in a white hat that appears on your garden fence by - is it a metal hose reel? - the round, black thingy, anyway... do you see him I wonder?

Okay,
2. Marcus Welby
3. Happy Days
6. Happy Days
7. Mary Tyler Moore Show
8. Rhoda
9. Bewitched

Suldog said...

1 - Andy Griffith Show. The town drunk who locked himself in a cell.

3 - Happy Days.

5 - The Simpsons, I think.

6 - Also, Happy Days, but you never saw her, right?

7 - Mary Tyler Moore. Ted's wife.

8 - Rhoda? Not positive on this one.

9 - Nosy neighbor on Bewitched (played by two different actresses, same as Darrin!)

(Well, they were actors in Darrin's case.)

10 - I Dream Of Jeannie

11 - Jeez. Was that Julia? It sounds very familiar.

12 - The Office!

Sitcoms have been too big a part of my life, I think.

Pinky is from Happy Days and/or Laverne & Shirley (it may have been a crossover role but the original character name is from GREASE)

Georgette Franklin was on The Mary Tyler Moore show, she ended up married to Ted Baxter

Joe Gerard married RHODA

Gladys Kravitz was the neighbor in Bewitched

Hilary, I have to say I have no answer for your questions. My reason is mostly that I did not grow up in the US. I actually partly did not grow up in the west either.;)
However, the reason of "being too young" is a much more appealing one to me.;)
My favorite photo this time is of the icicles. Beautiful!
I wonder if we get any snow this winter, it is suppose to snow a bit tomorrow, but nothing as wild as on your pictures.;)
Hope you will have a nice weekend.;)

Pat - Arkansas said...

Gorgeous photos, as usual! Glad those icicles are at your place and not at mine.

I'm not too young to remember... I'm too old! I flunked! I *think* I got four of the ten, but I could be wrong! And, I couldn't remember the name of the show on #3, just the characters... assuming I'm correct in the first place. I won't embarrass myself by posting any answers.

Missicat said...

Lovely pictures as usual! I am surprised that I recognized as many of those names as I did. I grew up in the 60s and 70s, and watching TV was a big part of our family fun.

Sandra said...

Hilary -- I was shocked at how few of the characters I recognized!

But I LOVE the pictures, especially the ones of the winter sunset. Absolutely gorgeous. And, of course, I enjoyed the one of Frank, because I always love seeing our grown men do something sort of silly, and then probably cringe a little when we publish the picture! :)

Cheffie-Mom said...

How fun! Is getting my husband's help, considered cheating? LOL!

photowannabe said...

I loved my walk through your wintery woods, especially at sunset. Gorgeous.
Not sure on all the questions but i will give it a go:
1. Mayberry USA
2. Marcus Welby
3. Happy Days
4. Laverne and Shirley
5. ?
6. Leave it to Beaver
7. Mary Tyler Moore
8. ?
9. Bewitched
10. Our Miss Brookes
11.?
12.?
This was fun but you are really going back into my "cobwebs".

Phyllis E said...

What a neat brain teaser. Here are a few, off the top of my head.

2. Consuelo Lopez - Marcus Welby's secretary?
7. Georgette Franklin - Mary Tyler Moore Show - Ted's girl friend, fiancee, wife
8. Joe Gerard - Rhoda's husband
9. Gladys Kravitz - nosy neighbour on Bewitched
10. Dr. Bellows - psychiatrist on I Dream of Jeannie

Guess I didn't watch as much TV back then as I thought - or else the long-term memory is receding as age advances ;o)

I can't believe it. I know none of them, I was born in 53 so I certainly should. Sorry, hey love the pictures. I love the icsicle through the window the best.

8) Joe Gerard - Rhoda!

9) Gladys Kravitz - Bewitched

10) Dr. Alfred Bellows - I Dream of Jeannie

11) Earl J. Waggedorn

12) Kelly Kapoor

Well, guess I can't get 100% without googlin'.

Andrea said...

Oh this is bad! Being born in the late 50's I thought for sure I would nail most of these. Yea, right! At this moment I can only identify 3 - Pinky Tuscadero from Happy Days (I hope); Georgette Frankling from the Mary Tyler Moore Show; and Gladys Kravitz from Bewitched. What was I doing when I should have been watching TV??

Crabby McSlacker said...

Well dang, I'm certainly old enough that I should recognize a bunch of them, but I'm drawing blanks on almost all of them! Perhaps I just didn't watch enough tv? Or more likely, I've just forgotten.

Thanks for supply the lovely photos to ease the frustration of flunking the quiz!

8. Rhoda (MTM)
9. Bewitched
10. I Dream of Jeannie

I could only answer two of the characters! But then I think I remember people by their faces, not their names, which has landed me in hot water before.

The pictures were beautiful, especially the icecicle! (sp?)

Hmmm...I don't know them all, but here's what I came up with... (Hi Bennie!)

1) Otis Campbell - Wasn't he the drunk that kept ending up in Andy Griffith's jail on Mayberry RFD?

2) Consuelo Lopez - She was Dr. Marcus Welby's secretary/nurse/assistant.

3) Pinky Tuscadero - OK, I'm thinking this was on Happy Days - didn't Joan Jett play her?

4) Agnes Dipesto

5) Gil Chesterton

6) Jenny Piccalo - Joanie's friend on Happy Days?

7) Georgette Franklin

8) Joe Gerard

9) Gladys Kravitz - The nosy neighbor across the street from Samantha and Darren on Bewitched.

10) Dr. Alfred Bellows - from I Dream of Jeannie!

11) Earl J. Waggedorn

12) Kelly Kapoor

Other than that, I got nothin'!

Peace - D

1)Andy Griffith Show
3) Happy Days
9) Bewitched
10) I dream of Jeanie

That was fun.

I'm really showing my age here, but Otis Campbell was Mayberry's much-beloved town drunk from The Andy Griffith Show. Otis's scruffy appearance and affiable personality made him likeable in spite of his reverance to the bottle. He and Aunt Bea were my favorite characters.

And who can forget Gladys Cravitz? She was always witness to Samantha's magic in Bewitched, yet no one believed her. She was the typical busy-body neighbor and had an annoyingly squeeky voice.

I remember the others too, but will leave them to other commenters. Thanks for the walk down memory lane :)

I adore that picture of the Goldcrest - one landed in my hand and stayed there, cheeping up at me one dawn morning. I know. He even sat on the gate-post for me and let me get my camera before hopping back up on again. (Yes, of course I posted it.) Grin. Even now, I'm Still awestruck..

• Welcome, Kenju and thanks for playing along. :)

• Shrinky, I don't believe you. You're just too young to remember. ;) I'm going to have to head over to your blog and see that photo of the bird. It must be incredible to have had it land on you. You must be like.. Snow White! ;) Thanks so much for your always-kind words. They're so much appreciated. :)

• Yes, Frank. You're a mere child. This must be why you can remember the names of some shows that existed before I was even cognizant of the television. ;) OK, fine.. I do remember them, but not well. Thanks for playing along. :)

• Thanks for the kind words, Pamela and for confirming that it was indeed an American Goldfinch. I hope you didn't hit your forehead too hard when you Googled Miss DiPesto. Thanks for participating. :)

• Thank you, Steve. :)

• You did well, Lime. Thanks for playing along. And for the kind words about the photos. Much appreciated. :)

• Thanks for the visit, Shammie. Yes, I'm thoroughly enjoying the milder weather. It's like a hint of spring. Today is sunny and clear and I should get out soon and enjoy it. Thanks for the visit. I'm glad you're enjoying that crazy pup! :)

• Terrie, you're number one in my comments!! No, sorry.. I lied. But you're the first to know that Pinky's sister Leather was Suzi Quatro! I hadn't heard of her until I saw her on Happy Days but she does rock and I have the downloads to prove it! And yes, Frank is quite the crack-up. ;) Thanks for stopping by. :)

• Thanks very kindly, Susan. I'll post that award on my sidebar as soon as I'm done answering comments. Thanks so much for thinking about me. :)

• I think you did just fine, Cedar. Thanks for playing. :)

The names of #3 and #9 are familiar, but I was never much of a TV watcher, so that's as far as I got.

I love your photographs of the icicle through the window and the tendrils of the willow reaching down to the snow.

There must be something wrong with my blogroll. This didn't come up as a new post and I totally missed this! And now the answers are already printed. I only knew about 4 of them!

Hello, Hilary! I must admit I have no idea about the names. I do watch T.V., but am pulling a total blank! Your photos are fabulous, especially the sunset ones, and the icicles. Your jack russell reminds me of my fox terrier when he was younger- dominating his leash and lots of energy!

• Thanks, KC. I'm glad you liked the photos and wish the quiz was more interesting for you. Maybe the next one. :) Thanks always for stopping by.

• Kate, I'm sorry that this missed your blog roll somehow. Blogger isn't always the quickest to update. I notice that quite often it takes a few hours. Maybe next time, eh? Thanks for the visit. :)

• Thanks, Susan. I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)

• Moi, I envy your warm weather. We've not had anything above 50F and those were rainy/foggy days. Spring can't be too far, can it? I'm glad you like the pics. Thanks for stopping by. :)

• Welcome, Redbush and thanks very much for the kind words. Yes, no doubt your dog and Benny share the terrier mentality. Hopefully "younger" is the operative word, and Benny will settle down some as he gets older. Yeah, right! ;) Thanks for the visit. :)
