Deer and Some Trivia

This is a scheduled post. Right now, I am probably back in my old haunts for a family wedding on Saturday which will kick start about ten days of visiting family and friends before heading back home at the end of the following weekend. It will be my first return to the old setting since moving up here and I'm very much looking forward to it. I probably won't be visiting your blogs during my absence and I may or may not have another scheduled post before I return. More than likely, I'll just see you in about ten days.. ish.

There seems to be very little in the way of deer quotes to be found, and those which do exist have already made an appearance on my blog. So today, I thought I'd research a bit of deer trivia for you - just for fun.

Contrary to urban legend, the popular German drink Jagermeister does not contain deer blood. The label does have a stag's head on it though. According to Wikipedia, the name Jagermeister means "master of hunters" the verse found on the bottle loosely translates as follows:
It is the hunter's honour that he
Protects and preserves his game,
Hunts sportsmanlike, honours the
Creator in His creatures.

John Deere began production in 1837 but did not have a logo until 1875. The still-familiar symbol of choice was a leaping deer but the first logo depicted a kind of African deer. This was rectified in 1910 when they changed to a North American white-tailed deer. The logo has been redesigned several times through the years but the well known green farming equipment still sports a leaping deer.

Not exactly about deer but since we've come to the end of the post, it'll do.

Beautiful captures of these animals. It's always a pleasure to see them about.

My parents would occasionally toss a slice of bread out when they were in the yard during the winter. One of them would come over and quickly nibble it up.

Wow, what great shots! I've got 5 deer that have made many visits to the Pines and I've gotten a few good pics, but none as clear as yours! The thing that jumps out at me is the fabulous eyelashes on these sweeties...so jealous!

Hi, Hilary! Thank you for a wonderful post loaded with interesting trivia about deer. The pictures are spectacular. My father was a lifelong shutterbug and deer were among his favorite subjects. Once, when we vacationed at a cabin in the woods, he rigged a camera outside the window with a string attached. Late at night, when we detected the sound of deer munching on fallen apples, he pulled the string, triggered the flash and snapped a picture. He captured many great closeups of deer feeding in the darkness.

I look forward to reconnecting with you soon, dear friend Hilary!

Venison pie for dinner? No, just kidding.
Amazing that you have so many deer in the neighbourhood and that they are so trusting of humans. But as you give them food, there is no reason for them to be wary. Do you have neighbours who encourage the deer too? It's like having your own private herd, like the ancient aristocracy did, back in the days of knights and castles.

One time, when MY WIFE and I were in a local nature preserve, I learned my favorite thing about deer. Their antlers are warm and velvety to the touch. City boy that I am, I had no idea. I always assumed cold and bony. But, when one came over to the fence I was near, I reached out and touched his (her?) antlers and was surprised to find them not only warm but also fuzzy.
