What's Skitty Watching?

Skittles spends a fair bit of time looking out of the lake-facing window.

watching wildlife  I suppose it helps that I've placed this cushy seat near the window semi-recently but mostly, it's because there's a lot going on outside that window at any given time.

Hairy Woodpecker4
It might be this lovely Hairy Woodpecker which frequents the feeder. She sat very still between the bars of the deck for a pretty long time. The image was shot through glass.

junco If not the woodpecker, perhaps this cute little Junco. Is that what you're watching, Skitlet?

blue jayMaybe this hungry Blue Jay? It's one of many who hang around the deck waiting for their regular handouts.

red squirrel nom nom2Just when Skittles has seen enough takeoffs and landings, this little guy scurried into view. The Red Squirrel has become a nearly immediate visitor when the seed is spread out. He's a cute little guy, isn't he?

wolf across the bayFar, far across the bay, a lone wolf made his way from a small peninsula to the point of the island directly across from the house. The image is poor as he was waaaay off in the distance. I think that's a good thing, Skitty.

wolves across the bay2Moments later, he was followed by two more from his pack. Beautiful creatures.

deer curiousAnd speaking of beauties, this handsome fellow also enjoys the birdseed which is scattered on the ground. And apples. And now deer feed because.. who could resist luring them into view? And out of the wolves territory. Right, Skittles?

deer peekingAt first, they were all pretty shy and of course, most of them still are. This sweetie is so endearing with those little peek-a-boo ways.

deer fawn peek a booAnd this young one. He thinks that Skitty and I can't see him hiding behind the bars of the deck. Come on out, little guy.

deer young2Awww that's better. Aren't you just such a cutie!

Well now you have a good idea of some of the things that Skitty has been taking in over the past several weeks. I hope you're up for some more deer pictures, over time. I've been taking a LOT of them lately. I just can't resist their charms.

More photos coming up soonish.

We have a small variety of birds coming to our feeders. But we're in the city, so we can't expect much. Thanks for sharing all of Skittles insights.

Blessings and Bear hugs!

I can see why you moved. There is so much to see.

Gorgeous photos...not only of the beautiful creatures of your winter wonderland but of your lovely kitty. I can only imagine Skittles' chattering jaw as he(she) watches the birds. I love cats. I miss mine....

Hilary your are surround by animals and they are not shy.

PS: I was just having some fun with my comment about the the RCMP. The best place to see the Mounties in Ontario is Ottawa.

Ah, you stole my heart away, those Deer shots are superb Hilary.

Wow, what sights! I don't blame little Skittles for watching her nature movie all day long!
Those wolves look exactly like our eastern coyotes. Much larger I'm sure, after having looked at some Googled "Canadian wolf" images. But the shape and general long-legged burliness...

I feel your pane. Life thru your window is a glorious thing to behold.

Brian Miller said...

you are surrounded by so much life....we get many, no wolves though that i know of...smiles...i think i would be sitting in the window to watch as well...smiles.

Oh, what fun! Quite the numerous wonderful critters to admire, not only the kitty but also me, too! :-)

Looks like you have quite a diverse wildlife show there. I would have to stop what I was doing to watch the wolf.

Our kittens have a cat tower in front of a window that overlooks some bird feeders. They definitely believe it is the equivalent of quality television.

I love those pics. I'm especially taken with the wolves. I can understand why Skittles spends a great deal of time looking outside. It's live theatre, and in many case, live dinner theatre.

Oh, my what a wonderful post, and yes, the deer are adorable, doubly so since they are at your place and not mine. Come summer they are pasture rats here and garden pests, but at your place, very cute. ;)

We have those little red squirrels too, but the smart ones stay in the woods with the barn cats on duty. What a lovely place you have. Lucky Skitty too!

Lots of activity at your feeders, I put one close to the house for the katz to watch.

just awesome!!! i'd be right there with skittles/skitty/skitlet enjoying the views!

The woodpecker photo is stellar! And shot through the window no less! Beautiful scenes and wildlife you captured. Bet Skittles wishes he could capture some himself. That must be a popular spot in your house; I know I'd be parked there most of the day if I lived there. :)

What a lovely bunch of visitors! I'd be sitting right there with Skittles watching!

I'm charmed. :) I wish we had something besides crows.

So many glorious wildlife shots! Beats what I've got on my camera--blurry squirrels and gulls. Not too many wolves roamin' my hood these days...

My Newkie looks surprised each time she sees a deer in the yard, as though it is all for the first time.

The photos are all so great. They all seem to tell a story with each one. I really like seeing the curiosity of the cat. It is such a great kitty.

Kitties do like to look outside, don't they? And what marvelous things surround your house for her to observe. It's a good thing that the wolves were at a far distance, I think. The deer are beautiful, especially the young one. More deer photos would be fine with me!

Skitty, and his people, have a wonderful view!

You have an impressive number of critters come to visit you. The fawn seems to be very young for this time of year. here, they have the insane policy to keep wolf populations down.

So enjoy seeing your critters, Hilary! At first I thought the fawn was a lamb! I remember seeing a pack of wolves running the river at dawn just outside Fernie, BC. I also remember tracking them in Yellowstone with scientists just after they were introduced in 1996. Fascinating creatures. (Skittles doesn't want to meet one!)

I think I'd fight Skitty for that window seat. Such awesome things to see from there. Wolves! My goodness, but I'd love to see that. All the critter photos are wonderful, and the little glimpse of the house looks very cozy.

Omigosh Hilary. Just look what Skittles can see! Wolves!!!!! That is so amazing. I bet you hear them in the night, too. Wow. Watch out little fawn.

Oh, what wonderful photos. I did enjoy looking at the visitors from your window.
As we have no wolves over here...... I was horrified to think they could prowl all round your property. Careful with your pets!

How delightful to see things from Skitty's point of view.
I love the drama of the wolves and the sweet faces of the deer.

Suldog said...

My goodness, you certainly do have a good variety to look at. I heard somewhere that only female deer keep their antlers in Winter. Do I have it wrong?

Lisa said...

Hilary that little peak a boo was so priceless. It could win a contest. Priceless photos.
I have never seen a wolf but have heard them and that was almost enough for me. I would rather see a bear. Wonderful photos. Sure made me smile today.

What an amazing set of photos! I love it, Hilary. The wolf is AMAZING! I'm rather glad, since we can't watch from across the lake, that ours stay in the forest!
Oh, yes. Skitty is a precious thing, too!

I love the snow on the deer. Their thick coats immune to the cold. Beautiful.

Thinking I wouldn't mind sitting with that kitty and watching the world outside.

Wolves! We have coyotes but I've only ever seen a wolf once, high in the Rockies when I lived in Colorado.

Wonderful photos as always!

Your photos are so fine! I had to call my husband to come and look at them as he loves nature and animal shots. We have cats too and we installed a small seat at the kitchen window so they could look at the birds and squirrels. Today we saw some Blue Jays, but I just cannot take them with my camera – they are too fast I guess and I am slow …
