The Fog is Rising

We've had a few foggy days and nights over the past couple of weeks...

foggy street recycle day
Let us go in; the fog is rising. ~ Emily Dickinson
This is how morning looked on our street last Tuesday. You can tell it was trash and recycle day but there's not much more to see beyond that. Unless of course we head into the park.

foggy scene
Mystery magnifies danger, as a fog the sun. ` Charles Caleb Colton
Fog is disorienting. It took me a moment to figure out exactly where this photo was snapped, even though I walk these paths almost every day. And of course, I took the picture. It's on the way toward the dock.

misty dock daytime
It is not the clear-sighted who rule the world. Great achievements are accomplished in a blessed, warm fog. ~ Joseph Conrad
The dock at our local park. The weeping willow is beginning to wear its spring green, which of course, hardly shows in this mist.

foggy night on the dock
At night the fog was thick and full of light, and sometimes voices. ~ Erin Bow
We've also had our share of foggy nights. This is the same dock as seen in the previous photo.

foggy dock
The yellow fog that rubs its back upon the windowpanes. ~ T.S. Eliot
The pond is on the left but is completely obscured by nighttime and fog.

frank halo
Derive happiness in oneself from a good day's work, from illuminating the fog that surrounds us. ~ Henri Matisse
Not a sharp image by any means but I still like how it turned out. Frank looks like he's got his halo on - that devil!

foggy night park path
The park is filled with night and fog,
The veils are drawn about the world. ~ Sara Teasdale
To the left, the path leads to the dock. Behind us - home. Ahead - the foggy unknown. Thanks for entering the fog with me.

I love, love, love fog and photographs. As you know, light is everything when it comes to photography. (Well, okay, there are a few other things but you know what I mean.)

I also find night photos to be extremely inviting. So seeing these, well ... you can imagine my response!

If I went through why I like each photo it would take about two hours and waaaay too much space - but these are just incredible.

You could easily do an entire exhibition at an art gallery of photos like these. Taking night pictures if quite difficult and you have done a beyond excellent job with these images.

Can't say enough good things about these! Take care.

I agree with Russell, this is a wonderful collection of photographs and quotes. The muted colors in the third image give everything this fragile or delicate feeling. The night photos are all worthy of mystery novel covers.

Amazing images. I like the first one with those bright blue recycle boxes.Of course fog has a way of making an ordinary scene look beautiful.

I like fog, a lot. It's romantic and mysterious. The only thing I don't like is driving in it, as that's life-threatening, but a walk in it is lovely.

What a fun medium to use for your imagery

so love those evening fog shots Hilary! Outstanding!

Your night shots always inspire me :) I think my favorite is the recycle street shot, there is something about the contrast of those ugly bins on the beautiful foggy street that is so captivating <3

As you probably know, I do love fog photos. Yours are gorgeous!

lovely .. I am a big fan of foggy shots .. and that devil of man looks practically saintly

i do love how you can lose your way so easily in the fog - even on the most familiar of routes. :)

Great shots in the fog! You had to do a lot of work to get these shots. Pictures with people in the gloom are my favorites.

Fog is fun, as long as you don't have to drive in it.

Fog obscures our vision: yet it, in itself, is a sight to see.

Lovely!

These are terrific photos, Hilary. That dock is just beautiful in the fog but my favorite is the last pic. And don't tell Frank I said this, but he's kinda spooky lookin' in that shot...halo or no halo!!

Great pictures, and I've always loved T.S. Elliot's comparison of fog to a cat. Many of your pictures suggest something unusual is about to happen.

Hilary, these are breathtaking - I truly believe these may well be some of your best ever work yet, and with the bar already set so high, that's high praise, indeed.

Some of these are mesmorising - I am going back to drink them in more..

You sure did capture the fog in all it's moods beautifully there girl.

I'm in awe over these most professional quality pictures.

God bless ya and have yourself a blissful kinda day my friend! :o)

I love fog. Love it! Unless I'm driving....

I am very fond of fog, there's something so mysterious and mellow about it and the whole world is silenced.

Karen (formerly kcinnova) said...

The street becomes as mysterious as the dock when both are shrouded in fog.
Sadly, most of our fog here is the result of serious air inversions: fog/smog. I miss the truly natural stuff that settles down over a meadow at midnight.

Well, Russell said it all; so I'll just say how much I like the night photo of the dock...the one with the Erin Bow quote.

Gillian Olson said...

I like the foggy pictures and the very apt foggy quotes. Fog has the ability to change a scene most remarkably, especially at night.

Out and out gorgeous, girl. Seriously!

I enjoyed the photos Hilary.

Those night fog shots seem to want to tell a story.

We live between a river and an old graveyard and fog is a regular visitor when the temps warm up.

Have a super weekend.

I'm a huge fan of fog shots and that bottom one especially qualifies for POTW in my mind. Great shots!

Fog is wonderful, as long as you are not trying to drive in it. I like how the blue boxes stand out so well in the first photo, but the night fog is so pretty.

I have tried and tried to capture photos of the fog, but mine never come out this beautiful! Love the first ones of the dock the most. The night ones are creepily wonderful!

You take such gorgeous photos. I've always got a story or a poem rattling around in my head as I look at them.

Thank you for your kind comment on my friend Peter's (http://peterbryenton.typepad.com/) blog!

Mysterious, enchanting, I love these! The colors of the tree in that third photo, through the fog...total perfection!

Soft and mysterious images!
The blue recycling bins remind me of home.

I don't remember fog in spring. Either I have never encountered it then or it was not as memorable as in your pictures.

The fog makes everything look so mysterious and beautiful.

Weeping Willows are one of my favorite sign to watch for in Spring-- I love that fresh green color they start to sprout :-)

Have a great weekend. xo jj

Such atmospheric mystery you've captured with your photos. I feel I could get lost wandering into them, like entering a really good chapter in the middle of a novel.

• Christine, thanks so much. I'm so pleased that you think so. :)

• Thanks so much, Lady Fi. :)

• Daryl, thanks. He can be a bit of both. He's a Gemini, you see (like I am). ;)

• Tex, I'll let you in on a little secret. I don't need fog to get lost. ;)

• Red, thank you. The shot of Frank was a lucky snap. He was approaching the light at just the right time. Thanks always for stopping by. :)

• Agreed, MessyMimi. :)

• Susan, nicely put. Thank you. :)

• Cheryl, he took a look at the image and said that he kind of spooked his own self. "Ominous" was how he put it. :)

• KC, it's a beautiful thing when you see it first coming in off of the water. I've only been witness to that once and I found it mesmerizing. Thanks for your visit. :)

• Linda, thanks so much. I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)

• Gillian, it's fascinating just how much changes with a little bit of fog. The whole landscape is different for those few hours. Thanks for stopping by. :)

• Thanks so much, Kate. :)

• Shammy, it's weird indeed. Kind of wonderful, too. :)

• Scott, thank you so kindly. That means a lot to me. :)

• Thank you, Indrani. I'm glad you enjoyed. :)

• Lime, it does indeed. I always think in terms of snow changing the landscape faster than anything but I'd be wrong. Fog wins, hands down. Thanks for your kind words. :)

• Reb, thanks so much. At first, I thought "Ugh.. trash/recycle day.. way to ruin a shot" but that was unfair. It adds its own element to the image. Thanks kindly for noticing that. :)

• AC, thanks so kindly. The man in the fog (Frank) appreciates your comment, too. :)

• Tiago, thank you so kindly. Very much appreciated. :)

• Elizabeth, thank you so much, my friend. I so wished it wasn't raining the evening you visited. I would have loved to have shown you and Eddie the area. :)

• Merisi, thank you kindly. No blue bins in Vienna? :)

• Joanna, I know what you mean. I've referred to that colour as "virgin green" when the trees are so soft and yellow-green - and new. Thanks for stopping by. :)

• Sandy, you're too kind. Thank you for that. :)

• Louciao, thank you so much. Such a lovely thing to say. I'll turn the page for you. :)
