One day in October when we were up at the cottage, we went into town to stock up on a few groceries. It's not feasible to bring Benny with us on those one hour excursions so he stays behind waiting for us to return. We usually do so with a treat for him.
On this particular day, we found something he especially loved. Usually, one or two nibbles of a treat is all it takes to make life good again for our boy, but this treat was different for some reason. He REALLY liked it... a LOT.
After his two, maybe three gulps of his new favourite treat, I placed the packet on top of the desk which sits between the living room and kitchen. They're not visible in this photo, but you can be sure Benny saw me place them there. It wasn't long before he made his way up to the back of the sofa so that he could get closer to them. He took a quick glance over his shoulder to see if he was getting away with it. For now, he was.
He casually sidled up to it and laid his weary little body down. It was merely coincidence that said action brought his nose pretty close to the package.
Guilty much? Do you think he knew that I knew what he was up to?
Regardless, he continued to inch his way closer to the munchies. This time a little too close, and I reprimanded him gently. He responded in the way that all toddlers in trouble do when they want you to believe they're not misbehaving....
"My eyes are closed so you can't see me!"
That cute face almost earned him another treat.

Hahaha, reminds me of how my ferrets used to beg. :P
Dear Hilary, Benny is a hoot.:)) That face is so expressive and you captured it so well.
Those treats of his remind me of some yummy treats for people I used to get when I lived in the US, I think they were called pizza roles. If they taste anything similar, I so get what he REALLY loved those.;)
Have a great end of the week dear friend - oh, and I so like all the bottles on the counter.;)) Now that is a real treat.,)
xoxo
At first, I thought Benny was going for the bottles, but then I figured Frank would have stepped in. :) Adorable and well-captured photos. Ya gotta love Benny.
Benny. Benny. Benny.
I thought for sure Benny was after the Fireball. I've heard about that stuff. Like sucking on a cinnamon candy. In whiskey. Hot stuff for a Jack Russell Terrorist.
Oh, that face! I was not disappointed, a Benny post just made my day! He's so adorable, Hilary.
Cute face expressions! Do you think he knows you blog on him and he has so many admirers? Those expressions are priceless captures. :)
Oh, that last shot is too adorable!
It looks a lot like Benny wanted a drink though...
He is so cute. Terriers have the best expressions on their sweet little faces.
I would have broken out in laughter had I been there to witness his shenanigans. What a priceless boy he is!
What a crazy entertaining little dog.
yup, just placate us with a benny post and we'll forgive you for no POTW. :)
haha so cute...my eyes are closed...that is awesome...smiles.
I remember that day. Now where the heck did those treats go?
Benny: Me? Up to something? Balderdash! Absolute Balderdash!!!
BTW: An obscure definition of 'balderdash' is: a muddled mixture of liquors. : )
oh he is such a scamp
That's a nice little chappy!
Food, that's what he's after.
Ahh, sweet Benny! Tooo stinkin cute!
but they're called 'essentials' so well, uh, doesn't that mean you HAVE to have them!?
Benny has requested I represent him in this matter
Siren and Isadora are preparing a brief as we speak
I love his closed eye scrunchy face
and the look over his shoulder is priceless
just remember now, they're ESSENTIALL
After all that he didn't get one?? Oh my! That is cruel and unusualy punishment for sure. Ha!
So cute
Hugs
SueAnn
Ha ha ha. Benny, as hilarious as ever!
We just got a one year old English Bulldog, and he's just so fun to watch! Dogs do funny things.
Oh absolutely another treat. That face is precious. Sometimes their mischief is just too funny to scold them.
What a great series, Benny is very cute fellow.
Anyone who thinks animals can't talk to us never had a dog.
Really cute shots. Must have been a super treat.
this little dog is very clever!
My dog is bigger .. but just as an actor and greedy!

Benny is such a character! I think he has you fooled, he's after the booze!
Yep, I think I would have melted and given him another treat! Not good for training, I know, but how cute! :)
Really sweet story..
Lucky Benny, to have you!
What wonderful companion this little dog is. Love dogs that are far smarter than me!
Oh, that face!!
Oh, what a lovely illustrated story. LOL
Oh, I love this! Going to try these treats, too. (not for me, for George).
LOL! I wonder if his 'toddler behaviour' is:
1. Gender based
2. Mimics pack-leader behaviour
3. European/Guilt upbringing
4. Cocktail driven
5. Motivated by food
6. Loves Rice Thins
7. All of the above
I wasn't sure if he was going with the liquor or the treat.Maybe he enjoys a single malt.LOL What a classic dog.
The last picture should be chosen for picture of the week!!It would have to have the complete story to go with it. Nicely done.

• DWei, all of our furry critters learn how to work it, don't they? Thanks for stopping by. :)
• Zuzana, I fear you might be sorely disappointed if you were to taste one of Benny's treats, expecting them to be like pizza rolls. ;) Or maybe not. Some of those bottles are indeed a treat. I love me my Fireball whisky. ;)
• Linda, we'd have both stepped in on that one. The liquor store nearish to the cottage doesn't carry as much variety as city locations and we might not have been able to replace them. Besides, Benny is so hyped up sober, I can't imagine him with a bit more spirit(s) in him. ;)
• Thanks for stopping by, Leah. I'll give him a scratch on the head for you. ;)
• Susan, Benny sure doesn't need a Fireball boost to get through his day. But after a day with him, we sure do! And everything you've heard about Fireball is true. It's very yummy and mixes well with other things. :)
• DJan, I'm glad you got a kick out of our little guy. We're lucky to have moments like that with him several times a day. Capturing him on camera is the bonus. Thanks always for stopping by. :)
• Indrani, he knows for sure. He keeps pestering us to start a blog of his own where he'd like to post embarrassing photos of us. We keep telling him "no" but I'm afraid my cats will show him how. ;)
• Lady Fi, Benny always looks like he wants something.. probably because he usually does. ;)
• Denise... shhhhhhhh! He'll hear you and then there'll be no living with the boy. ;)
• Diane, had it been video, you'd have heard the laughter. :)
• Ellen, you've got that right. He keeps us smiling. :)
• Tex, I'm glad my plan worked. ;)
• Glad you got a kick out of him, Brian. :)
• Frank, don't you remember that evening when you had the munchies?... ;)
• Carol Anne, who would have thought that you could actually get three.. THREE uses of the word Balderdash from one photo. Only you, my brilliant friend. :)
• Daryl, and then some. :)
• Thanks for the visit 25BAR. :)
• Almost always, Bob. :)
• Lailani, I tend to agree with you. :)
• Dianne, how very kind of you, Siren and Isadora to negotiate on Benny's behalf. Benny would like to know if you would also represent him when he's whining in front of "the balloon drawer" which is simply a drawer where we keep balloons .. balloons which when inflated, become the new enemy and must be killed. And if you'll bring treats to the briefing. And can he sit on your lap and lick your face. And maybe go for a walk. Or perhaps you could just scratch his head while telling him he's a good boy. Oh and maybe you could hold one of the cats down while he teases him by nipping at his ears and neck. And don't forget those treats. Hello, Dianne? Are you still there? Really, he doesn't ask for much. ;)
• SueAnn oh he got/gets plenty. Lucky for him he also burns it off by hardly ever keeping still. :)
• Robin, think of how he might look in your big, green spectacles. Now that would be hilarious. ;)
• Kristina, they do indeed. He keeps us so amused. :)
• Linda, he rarely really misbehaves so yes, it's easy to forgive that wee face. :)
• Thanks, Gillian. I'm glad you think so. :)
• MessyMimi, or a cat, for that matter. ;)
• Scott, he was so taken with them. Now, they're missing. ;)
• Welcome, Nedj. Nice to see a new face drop by. I'm glad you enjoyed Benny's antics and I'm sure your dog keeps you amused too. :)
• Steve, you must be right. It would explain his stumbling around and hiccuping shortly afterward. ;)
• Thank you, Richard. I wish you and yours a wonderful Christmas, as well. :)
• Elizabeth, it was tempting.. but we couldn't have him overdosing. ;)
• Laura, thanks. We feel the same about him. :)
• Tabor, it's humbling when a four-legged critter outsmarts us.. little brats. ;)
• MPM, hard to resist, eh? :)
• Thanks, Mage. I'm glad you got a laugh out of it. :)
• Kate, I hope he'll like them. Let me know. :)
• Daniel, I think it MUST be the Rice Thins. ;) Too funny, you are. :)
• Steve, I can only imagine what he gets into while we're away. We've come home a couple of times to find the place smelling like cigar, the booze missing and the television on the pay per view channel. ;)
• Red, thanks very much. I'm glad you enjoyed our crazy little dog. :)
• Cloudia, I see you know Benny well. ;)
• Saz, they'd probably make a good team.. Benny and Lola.
OMG, Hilary, I love this post and Benny's face is just too precious! I would have broken down and given him a treat (bad me!)
Busted! Benny is so sweet, he's hard to resist. I can see why he'd end up with extra treats.
xo jj
Ha Ha, a good story Hilary. Are you really a meanie? :-) Dave
Angel dog!
How could you resist such a cute dog who wants another treat? The photos sure tell the story.
What a cutie! Adorable.
For my money, Benny is about the funniest dog alive.
So cute! Good job capturing his expressions.
Benny is a fired-up, spirited dog ;) but he is also oh-so-cute.
so very cute!
Ha, love that last one. Just like my kids did! :)
Oh my goodness. He really does look guilty! So stinking cute : )
Haha! The little cutie. :)
Oh, that is a hoot. Benny's the dude. I love this sequence.
Benny is so cute and so expressive with his eyes and gestures. These photos show your affection and attention toward him more than enough.
That is completely hilarious! What a cute puppy! Whenever my dog finds a reason to close his eyes it cracks me up!
Hilary, the last one is perfect! I could almost hear him say "You can't see me!" ;-)
That is the sweetest, cutest, post! I just love Benny. I do think his breed may be on my list next time we are in the market for a dog.
Oh, this is absolutely hysterical, you've captured the moment beautifully. Benny is SUCH a character, who couldn't adore him? I simply love this post, dearest Hilary, in fact I think it's probably the sweetest, funniest thing I've seen and read in the longest of time!
Benny is quite a character. I can certainly see the wheels turning in that head of his. Love the shot with his eyes closed.
Have a wonderful week Hilary and wish you the very best at this Holiday season.
How can anyone resist? He has a very expressive face. Love the guilty look!

Nuts in May
• Reena, not so bad, you. We would have too had he not already had so many beforehand. :)
• Joanna, I see you wouldn't be able to resist his charms either. ;)
• Dave, not too mean.. only minor mean. ;)
• Gary, he's angel with a bit of demon. ;)
• CiCi, it wasn't easy, for sure. Sometimes I think he knows he's cute. :)
• Geraldine, I'm glad you enjoyed him. :)
• Jim, he's at least at par with the Suldog. ;)
• Thanks, Reb. I'm glad you enjoyed. :)
• KC, he does kind of have that going for him. :)
• Thanks for the visit, Tammie Lee. :)
• Karen, Benny is a little kid at heart. :)
• LWK, he knows how to work it, eh? :)
• Kat, thanks for stopping by. :)
• Sandy, thank you. I'm so glad that you enjoyed it. :)
• Stardust, thank you so much for your kind words. :)
• Becca, they sure are characters, aren't they? I'm glad you enjoyed the post. :)
• Anyes, he believed it, too. :)
• Nancy, JRTs make a great companion but keep in mind that they're a very high-energy dog and demand a lot of attention, activity and patience. On the plus side (energy-wise), they sleep like a baby. :)
• Shrinky, you're much too kind. Thank you so much for your enthusiasm. It's very much appreciated. :)
• Sue, I'm glad you enjoyed the post. Thanks you for the kind wish and I wish the same for you and yours. Have a great holiday. :)
• Maggie May, he'd be forgiven just about anything, wouldn't he? :)
marvellous post!
i just want to smooch that cute little face!
thanks so much for sharing this:)
Oh, he's a cutie! (And a smarty!)
