Heat Wave

This past week was the warmest I've ever spent at the cottage. Window, ceiling and floor fans helped to keep us a bit cooler at night and blissfully comfortable lake water welcomed our overheated bodies during the day. Everybody found a way to keep cool.

Benny figured out that the big, blue thing stayed afloat even when he was on top of it. He spent far too much time surfing the lake and trying to drink it dry.

Eventually, he figured out how to get onto it all by himself. Just like a child, he had to be watched at all times. He ended up drinking ridiculous amounts of lake water (every splash, every wave, every time his face met the water) and made himself very sick on the last day of our stay.

After a few hours of shivering, whimpering, sleeping, vomiting and peeing a few gallons of lake water, he began to improve. Here he is in recovery mode - feeling much better. He was back to himself before too long - and drinking more water. Crazy little dog.

This little cutie feasted on watermelon which Benny stole from the raccoon kits. The critters here believe in sharing.

There's nothing like an inexpensive pair of flip-flops to invite the breeze to keep your feet cool.

Even the clothespins seemed to be enjoying the gentle winds off of the lake.

Frank and I went fishing for walleye. I got lucky on this particular day.

Three times. Walleye is delicious!

Earlier in the day, Frank's sister Theresa settled into the hammock to read. At sunset, her book and sunglasses still remained.

In a few days, I'll let you know what's cookin' with Bubbles and Bayley.

That one of Benny jumping onto the float ~ priceless!

and how did you manage to get the blur of the breezes behind the clothespins? Very nice!!

Silly dog, indeed!

I'm glad you have had so much to smile about even on the hot days.

Those raccoons are clearly up to something.

I glad Surfer Benny is feeling better. Too much of a good thing....
We've had a heat wave here that broke last night. My wife left the house with a sweater today.

Okay, Hilary, I want to know why you are able to get such incredible pictures out of your camera. Is it a special one? What do you take pictures with? I love the clothespins, Benny's antics, and the raccoons. And yes, they are definitely up to something, those raccoons.

My Eddie swims around and around in the pool, biting the water every few seconds.....so by the umpteenth time he jumps in, he is also sick.......too much water.....he has to be removed from the pool like a naughty child.
Beautiful pics.
love the dog butt over the surf board.

Benno, my labrador, adores swimming and will only leave the river voluntarily at mealtimes. When he's out and drying off, he stinks to high heaven of wet dog.

These photos seem to chronicle a lovely break. Sad that even the best holidays have to come to an end.

I love to eat (and fish) for walleye. Your visit to the lake looks most inviting. I love the clothespins and the hammock, of course. The racoons, I can only imagine what's going on with them. So beautiful aren't they?

Thanks for sharing this most beautiful part of the world.

Love the shot of the clothespins. And the raccoon kits look like they are up to mischief.

Benny is a crazy little dog. He has more personality than most people.

As for the heat, welcome to my world. We are in the upper 90s this week. Yesterday, I got in my car the the thermometer said 102. Yikes!

Beautiful words to go with the photography. Wow. Some of it is beyond first class.

I am trying to get some favorite family recipes from my favorite bloggers. I even started a new blog—Fat Lady Recipes—to hold them. I have received some submissions with more promised. A photo of your dish is nice but not required. A photo of yourself is required as well as your real name. Sometimes I can use your profile photo if it is not an icon.

The Fat Lady Recipes blog should be getting some magazine coverage soon but I am not at liberty to talk about just yet.

You don't have to be fat to share recipes.

Oh, that hammock shot is the epitome of relaxation! And the clothespins are the same ones that fooled me last week, when I thought they were little birds!

Hey, did Benny venture back out onto the float after being so sick?

Frank Baron said...

It was a rare, and disconcerting sight to see Ben looking so ill.

But it served the little fart right! Maybe one of these years he'll realize he can't drink the lake dry and give up trying.

Nah...... ;)

Fine shots, as always. Looking forward to more. :)

Benny never fails to entertain me. He's such a charismatic dog. Your photos are amazing and I'm happy that you are having a good stay at the cabin. Love all the shots of the animals. You always know how to bring a good adventure to life in your photo storytelling.

What fun, fun, fun - and cute pics to document it. They had me joining in on the fun with you. Thanks.

What a great capture of little Benny jumping onto the floaty thingy.... and poor Benny getting sick. I'm glad he's much better. Your pictures are such fun documenation of your time.... all though I do have to tell you - you are much braver than I when it comes to fishing. I can bait a hook (with power bait) and hold the pole. I can cast and reel in my catch. And, there it stops. I cannot touch a fish. I guess it's the girly girl in me. haha

This post was so much fun to look at. Poor Benny, drinking the lake dry isn't a good thing to do.
Can't wait to see what's cooking with the racoons.
My fols used to fish for Walleye when they lived in Minnesota. I don;'t think I have had it.
Its too darn hot here today. 100 degrees and the reports say 105 by Sunday...Arggg....

Goodness, I enjoyed these. Benny, where is your human counterpart to sweep me off my feet? What a great pup.

The racoon kits stole my heart in this one, too. They are adorable. I am glad they found you.

The flip-flops and hammock are calling.

God bless, and thanks for stopping by. I appreciate your comments. You lift my heart.

I didn't know chipmunks ate watermelon. Do squirrels? Maybe, instead of throwing away my rinds, I can just toss them out my kitchen window and let the critters be my garbage disposal :-)

• Thanks, ED! :)

• Thank you, Brian. I had a lot of coaching from an expert angler. ;)

• Thank you, Saz. :)

• Thanks, SueAnn. I love walleye.. it's is indeed a yummy fish. Isn't Benny just nuts? :)

• Tammie Lee, I hope you're having a great time in Italy. Thanks for the kind words. :)

• Jillsy, thank you. I took that clothepins photo from a fair distance with a zoom lens. The blur happened naturally with that focus. :)

• Messymimi, yeah.. he's totally nuts. ;) Thanks for stopping by. :)

• Leah, they're always into mischief but that just makes them more lovable. Thanks for the visit. :)

• Steve, we're still having stifling hot temperatures here but I love summer and am not looking forward to sweater season. Thanks for dropping by. :)

• DJan, I use a Canon EOS 50D for my photos. It's a great camera and I'm loving it. Thank you kindly for the compliment. The raccoons are always up to something. They're such busy little beings and so much fun. Thanks for the visit. :)

• Hilary, your Eddie sounds exactly like Benny in that regard. Crazy little beasts! Thanks for your always kind words, my namesake. :)

• Oh yes, Friko. Wet dog smells permeate the cottage. We shared this past visit with four dogs (including Benny). Three of them enjoyed swimming and one of them was a wader. It's not a pleasant odor but they sure do have fun cultivating it. Thanks so much for stopping by. :)

• MJ, thanks so much for your kind words. Walleye makes a perfect meal. I can't wait to dig into the ones shown in the post. The raccoons? Yes, they're extremely beautiful and so full of funny personality. Everyone should know how delightful they truly are. :)

• Thanks, TechnoBabe. I'm glad you enjoyed. :)

• Ellen, they're always up to something, those two. Thanks for the visit. :)

• Steviewren, you're right about Benny on both accounts. ;) It would seem we're experiencing similar weather. It's been a super hot summer. Just the way I like it though I'd be a total wimp about it without my a/c. Thanks for stopping by. :)

• Thanks kindly, Abe. Good luck on your recipe venture, and I appreciate the invite but will have to pass at this time. I just have too many other things which need attention right now. Thanks for stopping by. :)

• Thanks very much, EthelMae. Yes those are indeed the same clothespins - up close and personal. We didn't give Benny the opportunity to venture back onto the float after that. It was late in the day, and our last one there at that. I have no doubt he would do it all over again if given the chance. He's nuts! ;)

• Thank you, Frank. Ben isn't going to learn that - or anything else when that static is happening in his brain.. which is most of the time. Your dog is crazy! But he's great. :)

• JariLyn, thank so much for such kind words. They mean a lot to me. I'm glad you enjoy my blog. :)

• Thank you, Scott. I'm glad you could join me. :)

Hilary said...

• Stacey Dawn, thank you kindly. Like I told you in email, I'm not any better in the "ewww" department. I can hook a worm, inflate it without too much of a shudder, and if I'm lucky enough to catch something, Frank unhooks it for me, and either releases it or administers the killing blow. I'm told that I need to learn how to tie a hook next. I guess that's better than unhooking a fish. ;)

• SK, Benny had us quite worried for a bit. I suspect he'll do the exact same thing next chance he gets. Thank so much for the kind words. Much appreciated. :)

• Thank you, Snappy Di. He's a crazy little being, but so much fun. Thanks for the visit. :)

• Thanks very much, Betty. I so appreciate your kind words. Benny has a lot of fans and I'm glad you're one of them. :)

• Fishing Guy, you were right there casting alongside us, weren't you? ;) Thanks for the kind words. :)

• Reb, thanks so much. I'm glad you enjoyed the post. :)

• Maggie, thank you kindly. :)

• Sue, the heat is getting to a lot of fols. ;) Do yourself a favour and try some walleye if you get the opportunity. It's delicious. I should have a raccoon post up in a couple of days. Thanks always for your visit. :)

• Lime, he's a total nut job but he keeps us laughing all the time. I'm glad you enjoy him too. Thanks for stopping by. :)

• Gary, I didn't know you have a raccoon with strange behaviour. Could it be that it's just semi-tame and friendly like these two, or is it really weird? I hope it's the former. Thanks for the visit. :)

• Thanks, Karen. Benny keeps us snickering too. If you get the chance to try walleye, please do. It's a wonderful food. Thanks for stopping by. :)

• Sandy, if Benny had a human counterpart, he'd not only sweep you off your feet but right into the lake. He's a fun dog. He just doesn't have a clue about when to stop. The raccoon kits were two separate rescues (aged at about a month apart) and both were brought to Theresa (Frank's wonderful sister) by two different people. They act like siblings most of the time. Thanks always for your kind words, my friend. They're so much appreciated. :)

• Thanks, Baggie. I'm glad you're all refreshed now. ;)

• Thumbelina, no. Benny NEVER learns. He has the terrier mentality through and through. I'll save a hammock for you, my friend. You deserve the relaxation. It's good to see you - thanks for the visit. :)

• Suldog, I imagine they would. The raccoons love it. Spike, the full grown male from last year still comes back to the cottage property for nightly munchies. It amazes me how he eats everything but the actual green part. What's left in the morning are paper thin rinds. In fact, he does a great job of all leftover food bits. Acquaint yourself with a neighbourhood raccoon and never worry about smelly garbage again.. though torn screens would probably become your new concern. ;)

I loved this post, Hilary! Benny is just the cutest - so sorry he had so much fun his tummy hurt. (I can relate.) The lake looks like the perfect place to be right now. It just doesn't get any better than that.

it's boiling hot in LA too. I'm sitting here with a fan blowing on me to stay cool.

I'm back from vacation and off to catch up on your posts that I missed. Hope you have a great weekend Hilary.

Poor Benny -- I wish he would learn moderation with the water to save his poor tummy. My neighbor purchased a blue raft exactly like that one for her chocolate lab! I'll post a pic tomorrow.
Such wonderful pictures of summer! The flip-flops and the hammock are my favorites.

• Welcome back to you, Tabor. Thanks very much. :)

• Thank you, Bach. It sure has been a hot one. :)

• Zuzana, thank you so kindly but you're not supposed to use the W word until the D month! ;)

• Thank you, Nancy. Benny just never knows when to quit. His brain doesn't give him that signal until it's too late. The lake beckons to me right now. I don't think it will be too much longer until we return. :)

• Welcome back, Joanna. Everyone has to be a sucker for something. ;) I've got a fan on me here too.. and that's with the a/c going. Thanks always for your kind words. :)

• Kkrige, thank you. I'll bet the Lake Erie water is pretty warm right now too. I've swum in it many times - at Port Dover though. Thanks for stopping by. :)

• Thanks very much, VM. I'm glad you like them. :)

• Thanks very much Tattytiara. Benny is long back to "normal" now. ;) Thanks for the visit. :)

• Thank you, LadyFi. :)

• Indrani, thanks kindly. Your squirrel images are just wonderful. They're such cute critters, aren't they?

• KC, Benny does not understand the concept of moderation.. in anything. I'm looking forward to seeing your photo. Dogs in the water are such fun. Thanks always for your kind words, my friend. :)

• Don, put that way, the place almost sounds magical. Oh, wait.. it truly is. Thanks for stopping by. :)
