Fowl Play at the Olympics

As you all know, the 2010 Olympics are currently being hosted on Canadian soil. Athletes from all over the world have been competing for gold in the beautiful west coast city of Vancouver. This post is about our own Canadian athletes. I may never have been to British Columbia but I have had the honour of photographing some of our country's finest Olympic hopefuls. Please remember to click on each image to enlarge - and let the games begin!

There are many events during the course of the two weeks but as with any sporting event, we'll open with our national anthem. Please stand for the singing of O Canada.

Curling is a popular sport in Canada. This athlete has just released the stone and watches as his teammates help to sweep its path to the house.

Down the ice, other team members shout encouragement to the sweepers. "Hurry! Hurry hard!"

Hockey is an exciting sport. Two players race down the ice to try to gain control of the puck.

The downhill ski course has high jumps. This athlete glides through the air before landing and continuing his run.

Speed skating is a fast-paced, exciting event. Canada's favourite contender is about to cross the finish line.

In the spotlight, a graceful figure skater performs a perfect routine.

Skating partners since goslinghood, Canada's favourites have completed a perfect performance in their ice dance.

They anxiously wait for the judges to present their scores. Top place!

The crowd goes wild with the thrill of victory!

Other couples were not as fortunate. Oh, the agony of defeat.

Please join us for the medal ceremony. We win gold - go Canada!

Honestly, I haven't watched any of the Olympics this year. Once the kids are in bed, I'm looking for whatever silence I can find in the interval. Great summary, though. I can imagine the events more clearly now.

LOL Hils!

The metaled geese are a hoot (honk?).

I adore Canadian Geese and yours are captured in all their splendor. The curling geese remind me of the ones I saw hurdling during the track and field events in the Summer Games. They are very versatile.

You know, we have a pair of Canadian Geese that always spend a week or two on our lake before migrating back north in the Spring. I'll see if I can capture a few photos of them for you. You may recognize them as part of the Vancouver team.

Love your sense of humor!

Now that was fun! I love silly, humorous things. I've just been gushing all over your purple post ...and I've seen the athletic prowess of water fowl. My mind is having a busy afternoon, I tell you.

Hilary, I don't know if I've ever told you this story before, and if I have, please forgive the repetition. My husband, working for the company before this one, where a lot of people were transferred to Colorado from Utah, was sitting around one lunchtime with a group of new arrivals. They were all outside on an autumn day, and the ex-residents of Utah were wildly amused by the number of geese in Colorado.

On and on they went, calling them "Stupid birds" and "Shouldn't you get a compass?" "Yeah, don't they know they are supposed to fly South" for the winter?

My husband listened to this conversation for about three minutes, and it was all variations of the same thing. Finally he took pity on the Utah folk:

"You do realize those are Canadian geese, don't you?"

They all admitted that, in fact, they were aware of this.

"So...you do know that this is South to them, don't you?"

Canadian Geese, smarter than your average Utah transplant.

I am hearing Oh Canada now! LOL! What a great post! One of the absolute joys for me, was being able to watch Canadian geese fly in formation while living in the Twin Cities. There were times they would fly at window level (my house was on a small hill) and I could see them up close. They are simply amazing. Beautiful and majestic. (I also had the good fortune to see a Snowy Owl. The Twin Cities being as far south as they venture.)

Thanks for such a cute post. It made my day.

Back again after watching some curling and laughing out loud.

Two of these guys came home today. I caught them in a very bad photo. I was so excited to hear the music, I just shot anything.

Hilary said...

• Thanks, Cedar. I'm glad you came by for a gander. ;)

• Thank you, TSannie. :)

• Sandy, I know that feeling. I have countless poor shots of subjects that I just wanted to make sure I captured before even trying to set that camera right. It never works out for me. Thanks so much for the return visit. :)

Love this! Totally nominated for Post of the Week!

This is such pure Hilary -- I LOVE it. Canada did themselves proud, both as hosts and as competitors. And I LOVED the story that was told about Gander, NF hosting 7,000 people for several days after planes had to be diverted there because of the 9/11 attack. Boy, I would think that would have made every Canadian chest swell with pride.

btw, yes my first thought when I saw the berries on a limb was "monkey"! :)
