Oh Deer! and Posts of the Week

First of all, an apology about the Posts of the Week. It would seem that I've fallen behind. Again. Therefore, some of the POTW post go back a fair ways. Maybe it will be fun for folks to start getting new comments on their older posts. Yeah, I'm sticking with that and retracting the apology. Never mind!

TexWisGirl has her Whistlers on Wednesday and Gail has her Tri-colored Tuesday. I don't know if I would actually dedicate a day to these beauties but I do have a fair number of photos and so you're going to see a lot of them in the posts to come - at least through the winter. Oh deer!

I ask people why they have deer heads on their walls. They always say because it's such a beautiful animal. There you go. I think my mother is attractive, but I have photographs of her.
~ Ellen DeGeneres

I know some of you folks see deer quite regularly. Some enjoy them with their cameras - some see them as sport. Considering that I was into my fifties before I had ever seen one in the wild, I am enjoying the heck out of their daily visits, this winter.

deer in trees3
Those enormous eyes watch me closely every time I step outside to scatter the food around. Sometimes apples or carrots are added to the menu. And of course bird seed is never turned down.

deer in trees5
One of the contractors working on the addition once told me that when you see deer eating from the evergreens, it's going to be a very cold night. So far, he's been right. Then again, it is winter.

deer feeding
The little ones are so adorable. This guy was probably born last spring.

deer steps snow2
This lovely beast appears to have had a big bite taken out of her ear.

deer watched by skittyThat doesn't stop her and Skitty from curiously watching each other.

deer grooming
I watched for about ten minutes while these two groomed each other in the warm afternoon sun.

deer at dusk2
When the sun goes down, even more elegant wonders make their way over from the neighbour's place, in hopes of a few late-day handouts.

deer butt
Now, by the above photo, you might think that we've come to the end of this tale/tail, but I do have one more image for you.

deer in moonlight4
A softly-painted sky, the moon on the rise over the frozen lake and one more beautiful deer to simply make my day.

Love the shot with the pump and deer, and the darker shot with the lake looks SO Canadian somehow! I know some people hate deer but they are so beautiful and gentle...even when they are eating up our garden...

The last photograph is perfect.

Oh, what darling deer shots!

Anvilcloud said...

Wow! You sure get a lot of sightings. They make themselves pretty scarce down by our cottage. I think they get hunted a lot around there, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Having seldom had a chance to see deer in the wile, i'd be enamored with them, too! It's fun to see them through your eyes/lens.

all the photos are awesome but the last one is spectacular

Deer are a lovely sight.

Very nice. No deer down here, so close to the big city, but I recall the absolute joy we had seeing them come to eat apples off a tree in our yard in New Hampshire (on the property I inherited from My Dad, before we had to sell.)

Beautiful all around. Thank you. :)

Stunning - amazing images, amazing creatures. What a wonderful world you live in Hilary!

i love your deer! never get to see them here at run*a*round. closest has been a couple of miles down the back road.

i don't mind folks who hunt them for meat, but don't appreciate those that just take the head for trophy.

thanks for the mention! deer on duesday? monday ruminants? :)

Used to have a buck come into the yard.

I think deer are cool...in other's people's yards. I love to see them but as a gardener I'm glad we don't have them here.

Oh, those deer are gorgeous! I never tire of watching them (and i've seen them all my life). That last photo is pure poetry. Thank you so much for the potw; now to read the posts i missed!

I could sit and watch deer for hours. And did when we stayed at our friends cabin in southern NM. Your photos are wonderful as always, but I particularly like the last with the moon. Thanks, now I'm off to read the POTW, Oma Linda

Beautiful photos of the deer. So sweet and gentle. Grew up looking at antlers and deer heads adorning my dad's place all my life and always thought it a morbid decor item. :/ I'm with Team Ellen there.

Thank you so much for the shout out. Very kind. :)

I am always looking for new blogs to read, so thank you for returning with POTW.

Great deer photos. I've seen a few here in Portland and they always make my day. I'll be sure to check out your Posts of the Week.

You do get around! And why am I not surprised to see you carry this task with so much love, the way you shoot the deer, and the moon and the universe in between. Happy Week to you, and thanks for stopping by.

Wonderful deer pictures! The deer come into River City, following either the river or the railway tracks — for shelter in the trees, and grain spilled along the tracks. Either way, they're wonderful to see.

Then, there was cougar which followed the rivers all the way up from Montana. That cougar one was shot a couple of blocks from our grandchildrens' home. A bit frightening, that.

Blessings and Bear hugs!

That is a grew Ellen quote-- Perfect for your photos of these gorgeous animals. You got some great shots and they seem happy to have been photographed.

Awesome series of deer photos. I especially like the ones in low light...not sure if it's evening, morning or night. I've missed you for while. I know you're busy.

Beautiful, enchanting deer! Wonderful photos! Thanks for sharing. I wondered which kitty's silhouette it was in your photo; should have guessed it would be Skittles.

Interesting theory about the deer and the evergreen. I should have paid more attention here earlier in the season--maybe it would have given me an early warning as to what cold was ahead.

Off to look at some POTW.

Oh deer! How cool are those shots! I smiled at the one of the deer eating the pine tree...I haven't seen any on ours and baby it's cold outside here!! (Maybe they snack when I'm at work~) Thanks so much for the mention of my post on the Pink Scarf reality. A project close to my heart. You are such a "deer"!

Gorgeous shots of the deer! Yours are thicker than ours, which of course is a good thing, considering the weather difference! Congrats to the POTW! I hope I have time this week to make the rounds. I appreciate you pointing out the ones I shouldn't miss when I'm limited on time!

Jackie said...

So happy that you can see these lovely creatures at your place.
Aren't they exquisite!
We have them in abundance here, but one beautiful thing is missing here that you have there: snow.
The combination takes my breath away.
Fantastic shots....

Wendy said...

Oh that last photo! They're all so dear (deer) - pun intended.
Lovely - thanks for sharing. Looks like you've found a good home and exciting photo shoots.

Oh wow. You have had some special visitors. They are gorgeous. I guess they are enjoying the winter after all.

Splendid photos.
Near neighbours of yours. are they? Pop in for a bag of something?

Barb said...

I'd say that last should be framed. Deer have such soulful looks. In winter, I see their tracks in the forest but rarely sight them. Skitty Kitty is loving her new reality show!

Oh gosh- that last shot is AWESOME!

Linda said...

Love the deer pictures, especially the little ones. There are more deer around here than ever, and we are in the city. I love that last one. It is peaceful and at the same time has a lonesome feel to it. It is interesting how much lighter it is at night when the ground is snow covered.

I'm enjoying all the critters around your new place.

Absolutely fabulous the Deer Hilary.

Pauline said...

That last photo is spectacular. I like that you feed them. Here I don't dare as hunters are only too eager to enjoy easy pickings.

Unknown said...

All great photos, Hilary, but the last one was breath taking! In my home town, the Deer population is sadly pitted against home builders. They are beautiful animals.

Karen (formerly kcinnova) said...

Here it's been ages since I was able to stop by and what a surprise to see my name on the list! You honor me, Hilary.

What do your kitties think of the deer? I remember how fascinated Cleopatra was when we first moved to Virginia (we often had deer in the yard).
