Lost and Found

Wandering around one day, I noticed a few things that were lost... and found. I was hoping to see some interesting birds on this walk but as I approached a park bench from a distance I could see something perched up its seat.

lost glove
It was either waiting patiently for its owner, or playfully considering a grope to an unsuspecting bottom. Come to think of it, that might be Frank's glove...

While searching for an interesting link or quote or something to do with lost gloves, I happened upon Unloved Glove - a fun little site dedicated to gloves which are lost and ultimately found by someone else. I sent the above and another image to them for their gallery and they were posted the same day. Click on Glove Gallery. Thanks Kenneth - aka Glove Guv.

overboard
The tree is more than first a seed, then a stem, then a living trunk, and then dead timber. The tree is a slow, enduring force straining to win the sky. ~Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
A tree probably lost its grip one windy day and found itself adrift in the pond. Part of it eventually made its way to the edge of the dam, just waiting to take that final plunge. You can see the water streaming past it and the slope of the dam to the right. You can also see an odd spotty pattern throughout the photo which tells you that I snapped it through a chain link fence.

lost scarf
Another lost article which someone lovingly wrapped around a branch. Its bright colour stood out to me against the otherwise dull landscape. I hope it doesn't belong to the same person who lost their glove. For one thing, they'd be getting pretty cold by now. But even worse - that combination of patterns and colours would be such a fashion faux pas!

burial ground
This little cutie found something interesting and was in a hurry to bury it. He was tamping the ground when I snapped this image. Seconds later he ran off to find something else. I hope he doesn't lose track of his hiding place.

As an aside, I know that many of you comment about our black squirrels whenever I post a photo of one of them. Black squirrels are the exact same species as the Eastern Gray squirrel so common all over the place. There just happens to be a large number of black ones in our area. The litters are often mixed. Recently we've begun seeing increasing numbers of little Red Squirrels in our area and a few that I'm reasonably certain are the results of cross breeding with the Eastern Grays. They're awfully cute.
These last three images are of something that I simply found appealing to the eye.

lost yarn2
The sun was low and golden, and this bright red length of yarn caught my attention. It was artistically entwined around the fine branches of this young tree.

lost yarn
I'm not certain if it was the wind or a human hand which placed it there, but I certainly enjoyed photographing it with the marcro lens.

lost yarn3
A gentle embrace

Thanks for losing yourself with me at the Lost and Found. I hope you found something here to enjoy.

My mind wants to conjure a story that weaves these objects together. They seem to represent a mystery.

We have a lot of black squirrels in our neighborhood, too; and people usually remark about it when they see photos of them. It makes me wonder if the black ones are more aggressive and run off the others. We have two that seem to be a "pair," though...one black and one gray.

It always renews my faith in humankind when I see lost belongings propped up where the searcher can easily find them.

I'm re-entering the blog world and I had forgotten what a sense of peace you always offered here in your little corner. I'm glad some things never change. :)

Every thing seems to get lost, I wonder if I am another "lost and found" item.

BEauty can even be seen in lost items. That little red string makes a perfect photo. Thanks for another delightful walk.

Great walk today! I totally enjoyed the red thread photos. There is an Asian belief that there is a thin red thread that connect people. And Lucy Kaplansky has a great song about it.

How annoying to lose a good scarf and one glove is not much good to a two handed person.
I wonder what that red twine was doing there?

Your black squirrels are beautiful. We don't have them here, moers the pity.

Found lots to enjoy, as usual.

When you are cold, though, do you care if everything matches?;)

Hi Hilary, I enjoyed this post immensely. The red yard on the bare tree is intriguing. We have lots of black squirrels here. The grey squirrels and the black squirrels are together. We even have some that are part grey and part black.

I love the red yarn shots. It really stands out on a grey day.

I'm glad I FOUND your post today, Hilary. It's a treat for the eyes. I like the macros of the red yarn.

We have a ton of black squirrels too. I love the last pics. Maybe the yarn belongs to the red scarf! Great shots!

I always marvel at the magician in you. You take some ordinary items and weave them into a story - complete with splendid photos too!

I laughed at your thoughts on the lost glove - or is it a mitten? just waiting to tickle someone's bum. LOL!

When I was living in Hudson, we had black squirrels in my backyard - but here on the west island, I only see grey ones.

I love the gentle, zen quality of those yarn shots. As for the glove, well, you pay money for something with a camouflage pattern you really can't complain too loudly when you can't find it, can you?

Reena said...

We have only one black squirrel around. Sure wish to have more. Enjoyed the red string!

Some great photos and a few good stories. It's surprising the amount of stuff that gets lost.
I do the music for our skating. Two or thee times a year I leave my cord at the rink with the cord they give me to connect to their sound system .

Great idea for a post. I just took a photo of a stray mitten for my neighborhood 365 photo challenge. A whole post of stray items also seems like fun.

You are so right; springtime is perfect for finding hidden treasures; love that red yarn. I have never seen black squirrels in northern Ontario.

They are all great as usual, and I particularly enjoy seeing your black squirrels. All of ours are of the gray variety, and they are abundant.

whenever I find something I assume is lost (vs tossed away, perhaps in anger or sorrow) I always pick it up and put it where I think the owner might notice/find it should they come looking ... its good karma .. and in your case .. good photos!

the red string begs the question - could that be a Kaballah tree?

I love the glove and that lost gloves have a place to be shown

Jayne said...

Love these, Hilary. I don't know why but that red plaid scarf over a branch, makes the tree look like it's a butler. :)

Dawn said...

Had to laugh at picturing the glove and scarf belonging to the same person and wearing them together...
Wonderful Lost and Found captures. The bright red made my winter day.

You have black squirrels!! We don't have black ones in Minnesota, we have the usual grey, some white and at different times, Evil Little Red squirrels.
Cute as can be, but NASTY.

I can't help but wonder about your comment that the groping camo mitt might possibly belong to Frank! I'd walk behind him, if I were you. Or maybe not. ;-)

I particularly love that first picture of the red yarn on the branch.

Great idea for a post. Each lost item could probably tell a tale or two. The red yarn is really interesting.

I've never seen a black squirrel in our area. I wish there were some. They look really cool.

Camouflage glove? Is that for gropers who don't wish to get caught?

I love that there's a site for lost gloves! These are all wonderful - love that little black squirrel. We have one living down at the end of our road, but he's too fast for me!

The lost glove looks sad.
I guess he wasn't found because he's in camoflage.
I once lost a PAIR of gloves.
Then I found them a couple of weeks later in the freezer in a grocery bag with the frozen peas.

squirrels are a funny thing. where we live they are all grey. just a wee bit north and the black ones are dominant. at our old house though there was an albino one that came by frequently.
