As I've mentioned before, we have had very little snow so far this year. Most of the snowy photos I've posted were taken around Frank's place. He lives a fair bit east of me and much closer to Lake Ontario, so sometimes our weather can vary a bit.
On this day in the latter half of January, we did have a bit of a snowfall. It probably wasn't more than a centimeter but it was enough to transform the landscape briefly. So, come walk with me, willya?
This sweet little sparrow found a perch where the snow had collected the most. You can tell by the beak that she was pecking around in the white fluffy stuff, maybe hoping for a surviving berry or two.
And there were a few of those to be found.
As the sun tickled the tree tops, sparkling laughter lit up the sky and the snow.
Same spot but slightly different angle. I played with the "temperature" for this one.
Shadows sure are long and lean at this time of year. Maybe that's partly why I enjoy walking. I look so much taller and slimmer in shadow. This part of the pond is frozen over but it's still liquid just out of the camera's view.
It's been a strange season. Oak leaves are still falling, here and there. Buds can be seen on some eager plants. And snowflakes add their two cents to the mix.
I'm quite enjoying this mild winter. And I hope you enjoyed our walk.

The only thing better than walking via blogger would be to walk in person - it has been an odd winter here, too. We had a blizzard in October and hardly a flake has fallen since. Yesterday I took a nap outside in the warm sunshine - on the first of February!
Very little snow here, either. Winter's been a bit of a disappointment -- I mean, we live in the Great White North, dammit!!
Thanks for the walk. :-) I feel better now that I've gotten a little fresh air.

Thanks for sharing the shots Hilary. I really like the sun over the trees; it is similar to what we see on a stroll around our neighborhood.
I am not complaining about the mild winter either. Bring on spring as far as I am concerned.
I like the hills a LOT and also the snowy little leaf!
We have gotten such a little snow...just enough to miss taking pictures before it melted in the morning sun.
Today is Groundhog Day, halfway to spring. The days in my neck of the words are getting longer by three minutes every day, and yesterday spring seemed imminent! Love your pictures, as usual, Hilary.
That would be my kind of snow, just enough to make pretty photos and then gone.
Even a little bit of snow makes for great photography through your lens.
It doesn't take much snow to capture the attention of this Southerner. Thanks for sharing these.
Nice to have a little for me, but there are a few things we have not enjoyed without lots like sledding.we are forecast with a big one this weekend.
lovely pics as usual, especially the sparrow. I'm certainly enjoying out non-winter this year after the two long bitter ones that preceded this one and the long hot summer. so nice to have some enjoyable temperate weather.
it has indeed been a strange 'winter' for n america! lovely shots!
Such lovely shots - I do like the sun shining through the trees.
We've had a very mild winter up until a few days ago. This morning it was - 21.7 C!!
We have had the driest winter in over 100 years. I didn't think after last year I would be yearning for snow - but there it is. Loved the photos - especially of the little sparrow.
I can't get outside today to take a walk so your post is the next best thing. Thanks for sharing these great images.
it is nice to see snow somewhere...none here though they say next week...we will see...it does add a touch of magic you know...love the vibrance of that red berry...
It sure looks pretty!
Good for you in getting out in the snow. I have been very remiss about getting out this winter.
You've made my day! I have a weakness for sun pictures through the trees. well done.
The facts, nothing but the facts so perfectly dipicted and articulated.
I'm afriad this weather pattern will be with us for the rest of this season.
Not sure what to expect for Spring and Summer.
Your walks are always such a treat, Hilary. This mild Winter suits me fine too and I have to be honest I can't wait for Spring to start :-)
fab pics HIlary...we may have snow in next few days...
hope l can get as lovely pics as yours....inspiring!
luv saz xx
The weather forecast called for a really bad winter but it has been so mild. I am very glad of that.
As always, your pictures are beautiful.
Always look forward to your photography. Crisp and lovely as always.
Yes, it has been a strange season and I miss the snow
It is an odd winter...and makes me a little wary of what might be ahead;)
We are now having Arctic conditions and snow forecast soon. Very weird winter.
Your sparrows are just a bit different from ours.

I don't think there's ever been a time, in the years I've been coming here to visit you, that I haven't enjoyed one of your walks.
Love the sparrow shot. As always in your photos, the detail is perfect. Isn't it amazing that such fragile creatures can survive the wicked weather that we often have in winter? It boggles the mind.
That was another fantastic walk. You find some of the most beautiful scenes.
Beautiful pictures, it is true that just a centimeter or two will tranform the landscape, and as long as it stays at only that I love the snow. Mild winter here too, and it is OK with me.
Very pretty winter shots.
What beautiful pictures. Red berries in the winter are so special. It seems like you are due a bit more snow, though, so I'm hoping for more winter pics from you.
Marvellous winter pix from Ontario. Out west, we've had the second or third warmest winter on record, and there's very little snow. Sigh!
a delight to see and watch, truely amazing pictures.
More nice photos Hilary. I especially liked the third one of the sun shining through the trees - Dave
We haven't had snow either. I feel really cheated. Supposedly there's some in our forecast for the weekend, but I'm not holding my breath.
I like your two pictures where you played with the temperature. I have to say, as I usually shoot most of my photos with a warmer temp, I prefer your first snowy shot because it feels colder. Thank you for taking me "out and about" today. You've inspired me to pull out the camera this morning :-)
I love the second contre jour image. I usually warm them up a bit. thank you for POTW. I've been away from reliable internet so I'm sorry for the delay.
LOVE the hoary leaf .. I am not complaining about the lack of snow, last winter's snow (and all the trips to the hospital during and after storms) was more than enough, thank you .. last nite after the extended forecast assured us of no snow for next week, Toonman told me I'd have to do without my birthday blizzard .. I assured him I'd be fine with just a chocolate cake
odd winter indeed
a mish-mosh of seasons, ever changing
I love the sprinkling of snow on the leaf, like a sugared donut
that last shot does sum it up doesn't it? such a mild winter here too.
We've had nothing but sun, sun, sun, so even your "mild" winter was a pleasantly refreshing brisk walk. And I love the way you can focus my attention on the beauty of a bird or a leaf! So easy to walk right by and not notice in 'real' life.
This has been my favorite winter in many a year. We are somewhere around 25 inches BELOW average snowfall for the season, and temps have been in the 50's and 60's many days. We have had ONE snowfall where I had to do any sort of serious shoveling. Nearing 55 years in age, I'll take that lack of exertion and cold and say "Thanks, God!"
Mild winters across a lot of the country has been on the news lately. Makes me wonder when winter will really finally arrive.
I enjoyed these photos and especially the sparrow very much-- the colors are lovely.
Take care, xo jj
Love the little sparrow, and I love the sunlight peeks. Beautiful!
A touch of snow can brighten one's world...as long as it's just a touch...and especially beautiful when your touch is added!
Wonderful walk and I love your description of the sun tickling the tree tops ;)
I love what you did with the coloring on that 4th one. Nice touch! I'm sure more snow is on it's way eventually. :)
I am also enjoying this mild weather! Oh, wait, I'm in Florida ... it's suppose to be mild! :)
Have a great weekend Hilary!
These are so lovely. I truly enjoyed each one. Glad you are having a mild winter. My daughter was telling me that some system was blocking the arctic air, but it's gone now. So Mr. Winter may not be through yet!
I like your snowy images - the landscape does transform when there is a bit of white. Unfortunately, we aren't getting enough here in the mountains of CO. Denver is having a blizzard today, but the snow hasn't come far enough west to our ski mountains!
Nice walk, thank you, Hilary! Love that little sparrow with powdered sugar on her beak. LOL!I think she got into the timbits when you weren't looking. ha!
Even though we're back to normal temps here, the snowfall is still not much - quite unusual.
Lovely as always, Hilary. Our snow is mostly gone, but it is still quite cold. I must admire my shadow on the next sunny day... thanks for the idea!
Thank you everyone for your always-kind words. I have spent very little time online this past week and so my visits to your fine blogs have been scarce. I hope to remedy that sometime next week. Until then, I'll still have some scheduled posts set. Thanks for stopping by in spite of my scarceness. All is well here.. just busy. :)
For me, absolutely the best way to go for a walk in the snow, via another person's blog, eyes, camera lens. Think I'll go make myself a hot toddy now.
I certainly did enjoy this walk with you! It seems it's my snow-fix for this year, cos nothing but rain is falling from our skies.
I love how the first snow makes everything so pristine, and I love your leaf photo- it looks as though it's been dusted with icing sugar!
Beautiful series of shots. Love the framing and the focus.
Love this series of shots! Please come enter it in 'Weekly Top Shot' meme. We're on Week #16 and I'd love to see you share with me and my readers! Here's this weeks' link: http://www.theviewfromrighthere.com/blog/?p=6115
Yes, I have enjoyed the walk, Hilary! And I love your description of the laughing sky; it fits so well with the photo.
and here we are in the middle of winter, getting the biggest strawberries you've ever seen, hoping it doesn't mean we won't get any in April! Hope your winter is mild!
Sandi
Weird weather here too. 60de. this past week, then bam...snow again today! Your pics are beautiful. I love the shot with the dog walker..the color is great! I enjoyed my walk with you!
Thanks for sharing your snowy pictures. We are having a normal winter for our area. Today was chilly and gray - a good stay inside day.
Glad you're getting a little bit of winter, at least! Except for one or two frosts, winter skipped us!
How nice to see the leaf. Sort of reminds me of an early winter instead of a later one. Very nice!
I am late to the party, but what a party it is! Love the peanut shot!
What a treat it is to stop in here! Your snowy photos are lovely Hilary. We haven't had much snow either but after all the grey cloudy days and lousy air quality here, I am SO ready for spring. Will look forward to your glorious views then too!
Beautiful walk. Thanks!
