"The Splendid Silent Sun"

As I continue with summer hours (random, varied and generally irregular), I am visiting less frequently and so I collect fewer than usual Posts of the Week. Wednesday's POTW will persist on being fitful as well. I hope you understand and that you're all enjoying your summer (or winter, for those of you in the southern hemisphere).

After this weekend, I'll be back at the cottage for about a week, and I'm not sure if I'm going to schedule any or many posts. I'll have to see what happens between now and departure time.

In the meantime, I hope you enjoy a few of the cottage sunsets as we saw them on various nights of our last visit up there.

sunrays breaking through
After a day of cloud and wind and rain
Sometimes the setting sun breaks out again,
And touching all the darksome woods with light,
Smiles on the fields until they laugh and sing,
Then like a ruby from the horizon's ring,
Drops down into the night.
~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow,

sunset passing boat
It is almost impossible to watch a sunset and not dream.
~ Bern Williams

sunset purple2
Give me the splendid silent sun at sunset.
~ Walt Whitman

sunset through the trees2
“The sky broke like an egg into full sunset and the water caught fire.”
~ Pamela Hansford Johnson

sunset fiery sky
Softly the evening came. The sun from the western horizon
Like a magician extended his golden want o'er the landscape;
Trinkling vapors arose; and sky and water and forest
Seemed all on fire at the touch, and melted and mingled together.
~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

sunset streak boat2
At sunset, Nature is painting for us... day after day... pictures of infinite beauty.
~ John Ruskiin

sunset dock flash
Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky.
~ Rabindranath Tagore

Love the deck chairs and sunset.

Had a brief trip a few weeks ago where I actually got to enjoy a sunrise. I'll have to makes sure I block time for the sunset as well next time.

Fabulous photos. The lake is gorgeous at sunset. It indeed does look like the sky is on fire. I spent this past weekend at a lake with friends and it was really nice in spite of the extreme heat.

A beautiful collection.
Scenes in which to drown and and wash the spirit clean of all the debris of the day.

Isn't it amazing how many different colors a sunset can be? These are just glorious. And that Longfellow certainly had a way with words, didn't he?

Beautiful sunsets. The only thing better would be to be there and see them in person.

Hilary, thank you. You've just given sustenance to my soul.
Looking at these pictures, I found myself breahting deeply and slowly, yoga-style, and just drinking in the beauty of it.
The last quote is one of my all-time favourites, and your susnet is perfect with it.
I'd also like to propose Ciara's blog Milkmoon whenever you're doing POTW again.

If I could take pictures the quality of these I would only put one or two on each post and would get several posts out of the lot. They are all so beautiful I can't like one more than the other.

I'll be scheduling a few posts (including a POTW) for the week that I'll be away. I hope to catch up again upon my return.

See you all in about a week.. ish. :)
