Cribbage Hands and Posts of the Week

Frank and I play a lot of Cribbage. It's a great game, and no matter how far behind one might be early on in the game, anything can happen to turn things around.

Frank has been playing since he was a child and has never attained the much-desired perfect hand of 29 points. He thinks that he may have had the second best hand of 28 points only once, when he was fifteen. Forty five years and countless games of Cribbage have passed, and he has not repeated that feat. He has, however, had the humiliating (for me) pleasure of having double skunked me once - just a few weeks ago, in fact. If you play Cribbage, you know how embarrassing that might be. It didn't help that Frank drew circles around the score, and added stars, fireworks and smiley faces to it each time he found it in the score pad.

Fortunately for me, I was able to redeem myself somewhat when a couple of weeks later, I managed to get my very first 28 point hand.

28 pts close
This is what my hand looked like the night that I managed to acquire the elusive 28 point score.

28 points
And this is what Frank's hand looked like.

The truth is that Frank is a great sport. The camera missed the high-five he gave me seconds later. (It still hurts to sit down.) ;)

And now, without further delay, here are the Posts of the Week.

The icon below is yours for the taking if if your blog post is named as a Post of the Week - either as top post or as a runner up.

This week's Post of the Week goes to one which was recommended by Shammickite. It had me laughing out loud and though I usually include recommendations at the end, I thought this one needed to be read, particularly if you need a good laugh. This dog makes crazy little Benny appear totally sane. Enjoy...

I learned cribbage in high school when a friend taught me and I remember enjoying it but haven't played since. Maybe I should take it up and play with hubby?

I've never even heard of Cribbage, which hasn't made it big in South Africa. Thanks for the POTW link!

Long ago I played cribbage and never got a perfect hand. Now I am married to a non-card-playing guy and haven't even thought of the game for along time.

Congratulations on that hand! Both of them. :-)

Hillary, thanks for the shoutout! I loved this post today ... any game involving 'counting' is too much for this ADD brain!

When I first glanced at the title of today's posting here I thought it said Cabbage Hands. I imagined they'd match the owner's cauliflower ears and green thumb!

Thanks for the good humoured POTW you bestowed upon my humble offering.

Thanks for the award. Much appreciated. I marvel at some of the brilliant blogs around. Nice to know this old man can occasionally compete despite technical incompetence of the highest order!

Nice post! I, too, played cribbage with my grandparents as a child but not much into games as a adult...funny.

Of course, I had to go read the 'breakfast' story...In a way, Pica (eating non-food items) is a kind of doggie OCD and might be helped by medication, too...harder to train humans than dogs, though, hahameow!

Fun, Fun! I like his "hawaiian peace symbol" lol! I sorta learned how to play cribbage ONCE. Then did not play and completely forgot how to play.

My husband's family are cribbage fanatics. He taught me to play once and I beat him and I think that was the last time I played. I like going out while I'm ahead. :) But you've inspired me to try again - congrats on the 28! And thanks for the POTW (when do you have time???)

I don't know how to play that, although I love card games.

Cuppa's father and grandfather used to play Crib a lot. Their dialog and commentary was always amusing.

Oh, you made me laugh out loud. His hand was very inventive and gestural. When I asked the Geezer, he replied that he may have had a 29 point hand once or twice. May have? I inquired. Gee. Sometimes I win, but I too have been double skunked once. I'm so sorry.

Great choices.
