A Winter Sunrise

One morning, last week, I awoke to a soft, peachy glow in my bedroom. I hadn't slept well, and I thought about catching a little bit more but I realized that this lovely light in the room meant that there was a nice sunrise taking shape. And I didn't want to miss it.

Once out there, I took a few photos so you don't have to miss it either. Please remember to click on each of them to enlarge.

Stepping out into the park, the sun was just beginning to set the horizon on fire. The frozen pond was a lovely shade of winter blue.

I always leave a couple of peanuts on the branches of this tree. This morning was no exception. Peanuts first and then a photo.

Further along the path, I glanced up to see this die-hard oak leaf still clinging near the top branch of a tree. It was catching some of those early rays.

Despite the fact that it's dead, this is still one of the most beautiful trees in the park. It's a shelter to many birds throughout each season. And on this morning, it was looking its best, as it extended its branches to greet the rising sun.

Just a couple of moments later, I walked to the other side side of the tree. Its trunk and limbs were bathed in golden syrup.

The sparkling snow took on a more subdued reflection of the vibrant colours of the sunrise. Distant trees cast very long shadows.

By the time the sun fully rose above the horizon, it gave brilliant colour to everything it kissed. This sumac just glowed.

As I headed home, I caught the tail end of what appeared to be the neigbourhood geese rehearsing their icy stage production of A Chorus Line.

I told you it was the tail end.

Thanks for sharing the sunrise with me.

Beautiful images. Loved the one of the geese marching in line!

Those geese are certainly the light heartedness to a cold and long winter it seems. Lovely beginning to the day.

I'm so glad you got up early! Isn't viewing a sunrise the best way to start a day!

What a beautiful sunrise, thanks. This morning on Long Island, it is snowing...again. It's nice that you shared your sunrise. The Oak Leaf is my favorite.

Hilary said...

I love the tree....it is STILL beautiful.
Lovely shots, and the chorus line is priceless.

A chorus line of distinction!

Haha! Love the goose production, even if it was only the tail end.

You deserve a reward or some recognition for being a dedicated blogger and photographer. Only one of the two would jump out of bed so early to get such good sunrise pictures.

Debating whether I like the oak leaf or the tree "bathed in golden syrup" more (nice description by the way). If pushed I would opt for the leaf but it would be close.

Light is everything in photography. You have done a wonderful job of capturing and using light in these images.

Take care and keep putting peanuts in that tree!

Thanks for the sunrise. I had one this morning (on a day off! yay!) for the first time in more than a week. Now it's clouding up again. From black to dark grey to light grey gets boring.

LOL @ the tail end!!! hee hee...your geese don't scoot South for the winter? That is quite a production, wow, great photos Hilary! So glad you decided to get out of bed early to show us that sunrise! :) That dead tree is spectacular...the second photo, bathed in golden syrup, and looking up at the sky! Of course, I see a face first!

Beautiful photos as usual. I love your eye and aesthetic. I never get up early enough to catch the sunrise so about the only time I see it is in photos. I do love sunsets though, especially the ones where the atmospheric conditions are such that the very air turns pink or gold.

My, my. Nature put on a gorgeous buffet and you've served us up a particularly delicious-looking plate!

Striking shots of that great tree and I really like the oak leaf -- what a warrior!

Whoever said winter was cold and drab has not discovered your posts. These were wonderful, what a lovely way to start my day with your colorful sunrise. Thank you :)

I love the dead tree! It looks like a totem of sorts, telling a story about the forest.

You're braver than I, Hilary. Nothing could induce me to get out of a warm bed, pre-full-dawn on a cold winter's morning, unless there were stacks of cash, or imminent personal peril involved.

I don't like the cold. I do, however, love pictures of wintry beauty. Thanks for sallying forth, and sharing the results :-)

That dead tree is marvellous! The Chorus Line of Geese is just priceless too.

Ah, the days when I used to go to the park and collect goose poop for the lab.

Those geese are amazing. Talk about a chorus line!

And that oak leaf soaking in the sunlight on that beautiful day that took you out of your bed....Wow.

SandyCarlson said...

Just thinking about those trees, too. They have personalities of their own. they seem to dance where they stand.

Wendy said...

Good for you, leaving a warm and cozy bed to troup outside with your camera (hope you had time for a quick coffee first).

Those oak leaves do hang on and on and on, don't they? Loved your dead tree - that skeletal silhouette makes a great pic, especially with sunlight enhancing it.

That was some chorus line of geese! I'd say they looked perky!
Thanks for sharing - you do have a good eye!

• Thanks kindly, Reb. I'm pleased that you enjoyed them. :)

• KC, I'm glad you came along to walk with me. Sunrises and sets should always be shared. As should dancing geese. :)

• Thank you, Wendy. I didn't take the time for coffee. I knew I'd miss the best of it if I had. Thanks so much for your encouraging comments. Very much appreciated. :)

• Tammie Lee. I'm so glad you could join me on my walk. I knew you'd appreciate the surroundings. Thanks for your kind words. :)

• Zuzana, I do know how you feel about the rising and setting of the sun. I'm sorry you're not getting much sunlight. That does go a long way toward how endless the winter might feel. Thanks always for your visit and warm words, my friend. :)

• MPM, thank you. Very much appreciated. :)

• SD, I SO get that "ha!" factor but it's worth it every now and then. Thanks for the visit. :)

I am glad you got up ... Saturday late afternoon, Lauren looks out the window and yells 'grab your cameras and lets go get that sunset' we raced into the car and sped to the beach only to find clouds had moved in blocking the setting sun .. so we took photos of the lighthouse .. I dont know about Kate but mine (using her BIG zoom) were fuzzy ...

The pictures are breathtaking! The beautiful red and orange sumat is unreal. Your camera takes wonderful pictures, but then look who's taking the shots. I love the geese! It's like they're practising for some kind of parade. Lovely as usual, Hilary!

• Daryl, there are so many settings to tweak in different kinds of lighting. I don't trust auto settings for sunrises and sunsets.. or low light. You'll get it all sorted out before too long. It's a steep learning curve.. and I'm still at the low end of my climb. Keep at it. It's worth it. Thanks for stopping by. :)

• Redbush, thank you very kindly. Your warm comments are such day-makers. :)

Seems the only way I see the sunrise is if I've stayed up all night. Thanks for bringing me morning without having to get up! I've often wondered why morning has always been so hard for me to see. Now, moonlights. I can do those.

Cricket said...

Wow - photo #4... not only is it gorgeous, it is almost what I was imagining as I wrote my last post, not specifically about trees. I haven't been about much these last few days so it was a joy to see.

I don't know if you "do" Lent or not, but that photo captures the spirit of it for me. Beautiful.

I think Emily Remler's version of Softly As In A Morning Sunrise would be quite appropriate listening.

San said...

I have basked in the radiance of these images, Hilary. I too love the forms of dead trees, and yes, they do offer places for birds to perch. At our house, we put our spirit chairs on the trunks of dead pinons, and the spirits do stop by and sit a while.

• MJ, I remember those nights. They're long behind me unless insomnia strikes hard. I do like moonlight too. Any transitional time of day is wonderful. Thanks for joining me, even if it was from under your blanket. :)

• Cricket, that's very cool that you had "my" tree in mind. You're welcome to share it at any time. Nope, I don't "do" Lent - I was raised Jewish. ;) But I'm glad the image worked for you that way. Thanks for the kind words, and for your always-anticipated soundtrack. :)

• San, that's just lovely. I like that idea very much. Thanks kindly for your warm comment. :)

• Nikina, thank you. I'm glad I toughed it out too. ;) Our geese seem to stay all year round, but it's possible that some of these are yours. I'll talk to them for you. ;) Thanks for stopping by. :)
