The Rain, the Park and Other Things

The post title is also the name of a Cowsills song from the 1960's. My neighbours and I have recently gathered to plan our upcoming annual street party next month, and this year, we've decided that the theme will be the 60's. Below are a few photos which evoked various lyrics from that time. Please remember to click on the photos to enlarge them.

Now the Green Leaves of Summer are calling me home [The Brothers Four]:
After a rainfall, colours appear more saturated. This green plant can be found in Frank's front yard.

Today while the blossoms still cling to the vine.. [New Christy Minstrels]:
Clematis are profuse in his front and back yards.

I'm going to pick that rose and watch her as she grows in my garden (Spanish Harlem) [Ben E. King]:
Lovely roses grow in his back yard.

Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head.. [B.J. Thomas]:
These were both taken from above, shortly after a rainfall.

The answer, my friend, is Blowing in the Wind [Peter, Paul & Mary]:
On the back deck, close to the barbecue, this ornament hangs below the wind chimes, which can be seen in shadow only.

Sitting here on the bench with my back against the fence (Sitting in the Park): [Billy Stewart]
Back at the park near my place, someone's artwork caught my eye.

Let me tell you 'bout The Birds and the Bees and the flowers and the trees.. [Jewel Akens]:
A Mourning dove watches cautiously as I tiptoe in closely for a shot.

Little girls, and boys come out to play. Bring your Dandelions to blow away [The Rolling Stones]:
A robin hops around a dandelion head.

If you're going to San Francisco, Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair [Scott MacKenzie]:
Bachelor Buttons grow all around the park.

Where Have All the Flowers Gone? Long time passing [Peter Seeger]:
Thistles have sharp, prickly stalks but they sure have beautiful flowers.

Pussycat, pussycat, I've got flowers and lots of hours to spend with you (What's New, Pussycat?) [Tom Jones]:
This cat was semi-obscured by plants and fence, watching me but trying not to be seen.

Like a Rubber Ball, I come bouncin' back to you [Bobby Vee]:
Benny's ball tells me that it's time to cut the grass.

Clever post! All great pictures, but I especially love the clematis and the cat! (I have a hard time growing clematis here and am currently without any, and black cats are my favorite. I have two--one that looks just like the one in your picture.)

Lovely flowers, I especially like the white rose, it is so blindingly white! Great shots Hilary. I like the cat shot too.

Wow shots all!
Now, can anyone say Rain rain go away? :)

Love the idea of combining the gorgeous photos with the retro songs!

(But I'm glad you skipped "If I Had a Hammer" just in case the Bag Lady stops by. Sore subject, I'm thinking).

Hilary, lovely conception and execution. The flower shots are wonderful and I am most impressed by the barbecue/ornament shot. Well done.
I love 60s music. The street party sounds like it'll be fun.

Hi Cuzzie,

That was a stroll down nostalgia lane. I remember sitting in our back yard on Wolseley studying for high school finals while listening to all those great songs - and more - on the radio. I often tuned into one of the French pop stations while studying my French (of course). I was first introduced to Petula Clark that way - well before she traveled "Downtown".

Thanks for the stroll.

Oooh, I love the one of the ornament from your deck and of the cat watching you while camouflaged!

Peace - D

Beautiful photos, as usual! I was otherwise occupied during the 60's and had not much time for listening to music. However, I must have heard (and remembered) some of it since most of the songs you so cleverly used as captions are familiar to me. Wonderful post!

One word...WOW!

• Thanks, Louise. I've never successfully grown clematis myself so I know what you mean. I'm also fond of black cats but all of mine have been multi-coloured. They sure do make fun subject though. Thanks for stopping by. :)

• Thank you, Reb. Water droplets on roses are hard to resist. :)

• Thanks, Indrani. It's actually been pretty sunny ever since! :)

• Thanks, Mizfit. "Wow" works for me! :)

• Too true, Crabby. We'll have to stop letting Baggie have tools! Thanks for stopping by. :)

• Thanks very much, Leah. Our street parties are always a blast. Hopefully this year's will be too. Thanks for the visit. :)

• Thanks for stopping by, Cuzzie Phyl. I'd forgotten that Petula Clark was much better known to French populations than English. I'm thinking though, that it took her so long to get Downtown because she had a tendency to sleep in the subway. ;)

• Thanks, Riverpoet.. much appreciated, even though you've confused me with your new nickname! ;)

• Thanks very much, Pat. Your memory of the 60's sounds pretty much like how I feel about 80's music. A few memorable ones, but not my decade. Thanks for stopping by. :)

• And a one word reply, Mark - Thanks. :)

Wow Hilary, you must be really old to remember all those songs. Maybe someday you can tell me all about the 60s.

Great pics, clever captioning. :)

Is there anything better than the music of the 60's? I loved each and every one of these songs...remember Jenny come lately? Or The Night has a thousand Eyes? How bout I ran all the way Home? Wow, my kind of music and such beautiful pictures to go with them! Wish I could come to that street party!

I would have gone with "Red Rubber Ball" by The Cyrcle, on the last one, but...

Nicely done, and clever. I'm going to have to give serious consideration to stealing it for my own use somewhere down the line.

Love this post!!! I say that every time I read your post, don't I? But I do mean it!

I remember when Bobby Vee's Rubber Ball was a top 40 hit! It is SO nice to read a blog by a person who knows and appreciates the same time period I do! Each of those songs I know, have heard countless times and can think of a place I was at when I was listening to it one time or another!

Great, great, and more great!!

Take care.

Great post, Hilary! Thanks for the stroll down memory lane (all those great tunes) and thanks, too, for NOT using "If I had a Hammer", because now I can use it! (Even though I shouldn't have used it in the manner in which I used it....sigh)

Great idea for a post! But you really hit it out of the park with your amazing photographs. Spectacular, all of them. Just what I needed today.

Dianne said...

I'm singing along too. When I first saw the title I thought of the Cowsills and then laughed thinking no one could possibly remember them lol

thanks Hil for remembering them!

the ornament shot is stunning, love the shadow on brick

I am a sucker for raindrops and dew on roses. Great Stuff Ms. Hilary!

Oh Hilary, I love this post! Beautiful, beautiful photos! Love that you matched every photo with it's perfect song!

• Thanks, Frank. I'll be happy to tell you all about the 60's. Then you can entertain me with your stories from the 30's! ;)

• Thank you, Sandi. I'm glad this post gave you a nostalgic nudge. There's always room for one more at our parties. :)

• Thanks, Sully. I thought of The Cyrkle first thing. It was a favourite song when I was a kidlet, but the ball in the photo is pink! Can't have that! ;)

It's yours to steal if you like, but I may repeat the idea myself sometime as well. Glad you enjoyed. :)

• Thank very much, Russell. A few of those songs are just a tad before my time.. cognitively speaking that is, but have sure lasted through the decades. I'm glad you dropped by. :)

• Thanks muchly, Daryl. You don't want to hear me singing either, so we'll just have to take each others word on that. ;)

• Thanks, Baggie. My reader tells me that you did in fact post that title today, so I'll have to go have a look. No more tools for you! ;)

• Thanks so much, Jennifer. I'm glad it hit the spot for you. :)

• Thanks for the kind words, Dianne. And who wouldn't remember The Cowsills? Other than the young-uns that is. :)

• Thanks very much, Cedar. Now you have me humming "Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens.." ;)

• Thanks, Sandra. Once it occurred to me to do it this way, I had fun with it. :)

I can sing along with all of these songs! Probably because I wasted most of the 60s listening to pop music.
The idea of a street party is very appealing. I'm thinking of having a BBQ and inviting everyone on the street. There are a few people I don't know very well and it might be an opportunity to meet them. Plus we have new neighbours.
But that means I'd have to clean the house and cut the grass..... hmmmm, I'll rethink it.
Great pictures Hilary, and a great way of illustrating the songs of the 60s. :-)

You must have had such great fun coming up with pictures and titles to match them! I felt like clapping when I got to the end!

You are so clever! I love it. You pics are amazing, as usual. I love the captions with them too. Wow!

Speakig of cutting grass, off I go! :)

Those are beautiful photos, as always, and is it sad that I know most of those songs? :)

• Thanks, ex-S. Why not do a street party of your own? We've done one every year (except one) since the mid-90s. Some images from last year's Mardi Gras theme can be found here. No need to vacuum or mow if you're partying on the street! :)

• Thanks, Susan. I really did have fun with it. I know you're a big music lover so I'm glad you saw this post. Thanks for stopping by. :)

• Thanks so much for your kind words, Kathryn. Much appreciated. :)

• Thanks very much, Addhumorandfaith. I'm glad you liked it. :)

• Hi Gary. I'm glad you enjoyed your time in Toronto. Cities have a way of changing on you when you haven't seen them in a while. I'm wondering if I'd even recognize my home town of Montreal. It's been about 8 years since I was there. Thanks for stopping by. :)

• Thank you, Photowannabe. I plan on having lots of party pics for sure. I couldn't resist the pun opportunity. ;)

• Welcome, TNC and thanks for your kind words. :)

• Thanks, MG. I love raindrops on flowers too.. cutting grass.. not so much. Thanks for stopping by. :)

• Thanks, Stace. And no it's not sad. It's wonderful that you know most of them, even though you were born decades later. At Frank's age, he's lucky that he still remembers them too. ;) Thanks for stopping by, Fivey!

Your funny post reminds me of something I realized about the music of the 60s before. Even though it was a time of social revolution the music had no violence...it was about flowers and love and red rubber balls...even if some of the lyrics had hidden meanings they were expressed so gently. So unlike much of today's music.

You have a great eye for a good shot, the cat photograph is purrrfectly adorable. Good luck with the street party, celebrations like that are priceless for bringing a community together - good on you!

Hilary, as I read each of the pictures and song titles, the melodies of each song came to me instantly! What a creative post and beautiful pictures as always! BTW - I love Tom Jones! We also have an annual block party here in MN. Great idea for a theme!

WONDERFUL shots to go with the various lyrics. i can't decide if i like the clematis or the rose best. they are just so gorgeous.

Jo said...

How do you manage to take such wonderful photographs? The clematis is lovely! Mine are all finished for the year. That is a Jackmani, isn't it? They're gorgeous and they bloom all summer.

I have started up a new blog. If you click on the link here, it will take you to it. It will take some time to get it set up again, but I hope you will visit me.

Chi said...

Ha! Tom Jones. Now I'll be singing that ridiculous song all day long.

"What's up pussy cat, woahoohaaohaaaooo."

Hilary said...

• That's pretty much true, Steviewren. For the most part, songs were anti-war, pro-love - at least in the later sixties. The music from the earlier part of the decade was still pretty innocent. Thanks for stopping by. :)

• Thanks, Shrinky. We have a great neighbourhood to begin with. The party is just the highlight of our year. Thanks for your kind words. :)

• Thanks so much, LLL. I'm glad you enjoyed it. You love Tom Jones, eh? You need to speak with Christopha (a few comments down)! ;)

• Thanks very much, Lime. No need to choose - enjoy them both. Thanks for stopping by. :)

• Thanks so much for you kind words, Jo(sie). I really don't know what kind of blossom it is. They're growing in Frank's yard and I'm not much of a gardener myself. I trust your knowledge though.

I wish you hadn't felt the need to pull your blog down. There were so many wonderful posts that should have never been deleted. I've already bookmarked your new digs and will continue to visit regularly. :)

• It could be worse, Christopha. You could be snapping your fingers in Vegas style to "It's Not Unusual." You should have a chat with Latin Lupe Lu a few comments up. ;)
