Trees Go Wandering

Trees go wandering forth in all directions with every wind, going and coming like ourselves, traveling with us around the sun two million miles a day, and through space heaven knows how fast and far!
~ John Muir

Let's continue on from last week's post about our October day trip. When we left off, we were having a nice rest on a bench in Young's Point. Now it's time to head north to Woodview.

autumn road
We pulled off of the highway here and there to see where the side roads might take us. This lovely path got narrower and narrower. We decided to turn around before it became too difficult to do.

Uncle Georges
In Woodview, we stopped in at a restaurant called Uncle George's just off Highway 62. I'd been there a couple of times before and had not been disappointed. This time was no different. This is a quick snap of the view to the right of our table. To the left was a fridge full of homemade pies and other goodies which made me realize that it's a good thing that place is a little too far from home.

rocky dock
After lunch, we headed back south and stopped on along a side road which took us to the shores of Stony Lake for a brief look around.

burleigh falls rocky tree
We marveled at how a tree could grow so strongly out of a rock like that.

likin' the lichen
With a closer look at water level, we could see a lot more growth had taken root. I was likin' the lichen.

texture
There were interesting, weathered textures all over the place.

shells and rope
Like here, amid the rope, the shells and other stuff.

contrast
A tiny aster was growing in front of an upturned boat.

bf end of falls
Once we were done exploring that area, we moved a couple of clicks south to Burleigh Falls. The falls are rather swift but the drop is more horizontal than vertical and I didn't snap any photos at the cascade's peak. Instead, we made our way to a spot just beyond the action.

bf rocky
We found a small footpath which brought us to a rocky spot with a view of still more trees growing from unlikely ground.

bf little rock
Here's a view from a different direction when looking to the shoreline just beyond the rocky outcrop.

bf rocky tree
This tree has a pretty impressive will to survive. Nature is so amazing that way.

bf framed
As the day began to darken, we made our way back to Peterborough, looking forward to the next time we will head out day tripping.

More photos coming up before too long.

An amazing walk to take! The trees growing from rock do it by breaking rock bit by bit with their roots, it reminds me of the value of persistence every time i see trees growing that way.

Wonderful, amazing pictures, as always. We have lots of trees around here growing out of rocks just like that. It is always fascinating to consider their beginnings. :-)

these are so beautiful Hilary. I've been thinking about taking my son out for some forest therapy.

Rock, trees and water. You capture north Ontario really well although it isn't very far north in terms of latitude, but it is north in terms of terrain.

While the photos are all lovely I do really like that blue wooden wall. I must post about my walk to the nearby lake...maybe on my "other" blog. This time of year is perfect for photographers.

Oh, it must have been hard to make that decision to turn around. That road looks so inviting...and amazingly beautiful. I do like the picture of the waterfall, even though it doesn't show the main action of the falls. It's just a pretty picture. That rocky shoreline makes for some beautiful images.

Always lovely to be here....
I am feeling under the weather (had to go to the doctor this morning. Bronchitis. Sigh.
I don't have time to be sick, but the nurse said, "Gonna give you this shot in the hip, my friend!"
Bared the hip. Got it done, and then drove to the pharmacy to get my antibiotic prescription filled. About to sleep the afternoon away.
Stopped here before I closed my eyes.
So glad I did. Your photos always lift me up.
Thank you so much....
Love,
Jackie

It's remarkable what trees are capable of doing around rocks.

Just gorgeous, Hilary!
You captured the rock so well. I miss those. Too much limestone around here!

As usual your photos are amazing. You sure found a good journey in order to take so many great photographs. The restaurant would be on my list of to do's often as I really like pie.

I love those weathered photographs. The colors are stunning.

Where I would see peeling paint, you see texture and interest...that's the artist in you and why you take such amazing pics. It is wonderful to see how things can grow in the most unusual and harsh circumstances...lessons I think we can take from nature! Have a good weekend!

That first picture (which I remember from FB) is absolutely stunning. Living on the SE Coast, I miss the colors of fall (we get an occassional red with a maple and a few nicely colored hickories, and the cyrpress turns a bit yellow but that's about it).

Breathtaking series of photos, Hilary.
Love them all, the clouds are gorgeous, the Angel watching over the plots, the trees and scenery and all the Day Tripping highlights.
