Ice and Snow

This winter has seen all sorts of weather. It was balmy enough one January day to wear nothing heavier than a sweatshirt. But it's also been frigid enough to bundle up in several layers in order to border on feeling warm and snug. We've seen rain, snow, sunny melts and icy waterways. Right now, we're being pummeled by a winter storm but it's nighttime and windy, and I'm not anxious to bring my camera out in that. So for this post, I share a few photos from earlier in the winter.

cracked ice
A thin layer of ice crackles under the pressure of an intrusive step.

geese in sunshine
Geese atop the frozen pond, tuck themselves in to keep warm.

cut down
A cut tree trunk wears a snowy cap while sunning itself one late afternoon.

fencicle
A droplet frozen in place on the chain link fence.

oak leaf in snow
A curled oak leaf comes to rest upon the snowy path.

leaf in the snow
I'm not sure what plant this is but it made a heroic attempt to seek out the sunlight through this patch of icy snow.

ice sticks close up
Icicles dangle above me just outside my front door.

iciles exposure
Another cluster of frozen spikes. This time I played up the contrast and vibrance for a more colourful effect.

tequila
And finally, you may opt to drink this over ice - Frank's favourite tequila.

More photos in a few days.

Ironically, I had a post title earlier this week "No Snow, No Ice"! HA! Great examples of having such!

the last one brings an inner 'glow' feeling. :)

love the light and color reflected in the icicles but i like the oak leaf in the snow best.

Brrrrrr!!! You can have it Cuzzie. No icicles where we are :o)

Beautiful pictures, though. :)

The geese really were hunkering down, weren't they?

I love the chill of those icicles.

Well, you know that once we have that drink, everything about the poor ducks freezing their tails off will be totally put aside until next spring.

Hellebore is the plant trying to come up for air and sun, blooming late in winter.

i love looking at icicles....they make some pretty cool formations.....havent had too many this year...its gone too fast from cold to hot...

Brrr...I've never seen Canada Geese looking so cold. Love those icicle shots you got...not too sure about the tequila shot, though, as I've never tried it. But there's always a first time.
Cheers!

I must say your photos make a bitter winter look very inviting...with or without Tequila.

I haven't seen many icicles this year, so thanks for sharing! All beautiful, wintry pics.

Each photo a work of art to ponder.

I think the plant is a sticky geranium leaf. ;>

I'm cold just looking at these pics! We haven't had any snow worth mentioning in my town yet, but a little sleet here and there.

The first shot is most riveting to me. It's like shattered, frosty glass!

My favorite is the plant fighting its way through the ice!

I love the icicles! Fabulous pics, as always.
Though after these last few days I think I am done with winter and snow. I could even skip right over spring and go right to summer. ;)

The weather definitely has been strange, and I am VERY ready for spring.

Love these icicle photos, Hilary!

As always, your photographs are amazing! I love the third one :-).

Stay warm!

Well, for not going outside you got some fantastic photos. Now some other blogs have some awesome snow pictures. There's not much on the news here about your storm.

I was always fascinated, as a kid, by the sort of ice in your first photo. I used to wonder where the water underneath went. I grew older, learned about evaporation, and lost some magic. Oh, well.

That Tequila looks so warming and inviting, after the cold ice and snow photos!
There is something so beautiful about seeing logs in the snow, maybe the association with log fires, but whatever, it works for me.

Over ice? A fine tequila??!!

Nay, young woman. A fine tequila, like a fine scotch or other whiskey, is sipped neat, at room temperature.

Nice pics, though. ;)

Frank knows his tequila.
Over ice indeed.
Beautiful pictures, and I don't know about you, but I am SICK of winter.
SICK TO DEATH.

I just love icicles. Sometimes they grow into the most interesting shapes. I have a picture of a spiral icicle. I guess the temp was hovering between freezing and melting.

Gail Dixon said...

I cannot imagine living in such frigid temperatures. How the birds, ducks and wildlife survive is beyond me! Lovely photos, all. I guess if Frank runs out of ice he can always open the front door and pluck an icicle off the fence. The tequila would kill any germs, right? I kid. :)

Thanks for the tequila to warm me up after your chilling photographs. I love how thin ice looks like glass when it breaks.

You are a master, my friend. All my winter photos look drab and dreary. Yours sparkle with life. I love the icicle on the chain link fence and the rainbow effect in the cluster of icicles.

Oooh look at those geese, 2 legs, 1 leg and numblegs ;)

Your very first photograph of the shattered ice really grabbed me tonight.
And it was perfect to offer some warmth at the end. How very kind of Frank to share his tequila! :)

Hope you keep warm and stay safe in the storm.

The weather has been crazy here too! But the photos have been great! I love the first pic...Looks like tissue paper. I hope those geese aren't frozen to the pond!

You guys are getting it all! It was balmy here today at 60 degrees :). Now, where's my tequila. All I have is orange juice or coffee! Not nearly so photogenic as that gorgeous bottle!

Looking at your photos made me feel cold. That is until I reached the last one and I suddenly felt warm:-)

you know, as a kid i found it very gratifying to crack thin layers of ice with my foot like in that first picture. i liked it better than stomping in puddles.
