When The Moon Hits Your Eye
Here are some images from last night's lunar eclipse. It began here at approximately 8:30 EST and ended shortly after midnight. These photos were taken from my snow-covered balcony. I wasn't able to get a decent capture of the eclipse in its totality, partly due to the angle at which I had to shoot, but mostly because I don't have a tripod - nor a steady hand.

Awesome photos, Hil! Much better than the Bag Lady managed with her little camera, although she did get one of the total eclipse...but it's pretty tiny. She'll post it later today.
Fine shots Hil. It's neat watching you expand the boundaries of what you thought your camera was capable of. :)
Lovely photos Hilary! I was only able to watch every so often & I didn't even attempt to take a pic with any of the cameras I have.
No tripod?? Fantastic pictures, Hilary! I like that you followed through afterward. (I didn't.) It will be fun to roam around and see the pictures people took of the lunar eclipse.

I tried many times,even with a tripod and have many blurry discs to show for it.
I ended up just plunking down with the binoculars and a mug of tea and resigning myself to no photos.

Your moon shots are perfect. Mine were awful, but the best I could do with the equipment at hand! But it was soooo coooold out there last night. I hope it's a little warmer for the next total eclipse in Dec 2010.

• Nope, no tripod, Craver - just the railing on my balcony - which became more difficult to rest against as the moon rose higher in the sky. Thanks for your kind words.

Just amazing! Your moon is so yellow, like a harvest moon...ours was silvery and red. And mine looked drunk in the photo. Really incredible shots, Hil. Shutter speed & aperture still sound like jlsdihgk to me...Grasshopper will take babysteps following your lead :)
Thanks, Grasshopper Jo, but trust me when I say that I have no idea where the pebbles are, nor will I be snatching them anytime soon. This jlsdihgk of which you speak is only mildly comprehendible to me. I'm just happy that I've been able to find those settings and play with them some.
Night shots almost always turn out yellowish for me. The moon really did appear a fair bit rustier than this. Perhaps I should have played with the colour in Photoshop.

Wicked good. I stood outside with no coat on, the wrong lens, and no tripod. Add to that I had a bunch of wine and the results are blurry at best.
Hmm, it started around (9:35 pm here I think. My daughter was into it. Amazing how you got those shots :-)
